Happy Remote Control Day!

I love a good geek holiday, especially when it has to do with honoring one of the greatest inventions of all time — the remote control! I can't even imagine LBTRC (life before the remote control), a time when you'd actually have to get up to change the channel — eeek! Oh grandma and grandpa, if only you got to experience the awesomeness that is remote controls. Did you know that it was Apple's Steve Wozniak who started the company that created the CORE (Controller Of Remote Equipment) remote control?! In my house, we have a whopping six remote controls lying around, so this Remote Buddy vertical remote holder may be exactly what my living room needs. For $60, this color-coded caddy will send a signal to the remote if it gets lost, oh and the cup holder, it's included too!

Grandma and grandpa?? We had to manually change the channels growing up, and I'm only 23! (I also had a black and white tv at one point. Maybe my family was just stuck in the dark ages?)

I'm 23 and we had manual controls on our tv too when I was a kid. I don't recall having a black and white tv, although I would watch my uncle's when we visited.

Also, I would suggest trading in those six remotes for a Harmony Eye-wink ours controls every system, and is rechargeable.

At $60, it may be affordable and maybe even useful, but it doesn't change the fact that it's hideous as hell. I wouldn't be caught dead having that thing on my coffee table! With six remotes, I think it's time to clear the clutter and pick up a universal remote. Sure, they're pricier, but I love my Harmony One. Fully and easily programmable with all popular devices, and I know here's the important thing to some of you -- even Mac compatible!

madetoheal: Yes, I definitely remember manually changing the channel. But then again, it was when I would watch cartoons 2 feet away from the screen so I didn't have a problem with it! Smiling

I'm a big fan of the Harmony line and the Universal Remotes line. I had the Harmony 880 and recently upgraded to the Harmony 1000. I've sold and installed the Universal Remote MX-3000, and that thing is amazing beyond belief.

i love the remote for the quickness. i don't mind getting up to change the channel but hitting the up or down button a gazillion times to go through all 150 channels is not gonna work. remotes weren't necessary when we had 3 channels. now you need them to be able to type in the channel numbers. greatest invention!

I don't even want to discuss how much my husband spent on a touch-screen universal remote, but I will say that it comes in handy and it's a much more attractive solution than having a collection on display.
