I have to admit that I'm not an avid radio listener like I used to be. Since I don't have a car, it really cuts down on the opportunity, plus it's just not necessary to sit through commercials and the same songs every hour when I can pick and choose tracks I want, and upload a playlist to my iPod.
So when I heard news that the recording industry is claiming that AM-FM radio broadcasts are a form of piracy, and they should pay a tax for each spin of an artist's track, I wasn't surprised. With floundering CD sales, I imagine they'd panic and try to get revenue any way they can. Sure, the radio offers a free listen, but seriously, where would popular artists be without the mass exposure of the radio?
I think the recording industry might be biting themselves in the foot here, but it did make me wonder — do you still listen to the radio, or do you get the majority of your tunes from your iPod/MP3 player and Internet Radio these days?

my radio gets put on first thing in the morning, shut off last thing at night. and i can't stand talk....gotta flip until i find music!
1I only listen to the radio in the car. I don't have a radio elsewhere and don't tend to stream radio unless its commercial free.
2I wouldn't hear new music as often if I didn't occasionally turn on the radio. I tend to stick to what I know until something new comes along. So, yay radio!
3I only listen to non-commercial radio stations that stream online. I haven't found a decent commercial air wave radio station in 5+ years.
4there's only two two stations i listen to now on the radio. 91.1 KCSM & 104.9 (sometimes). there's so much crap on the radio now.
5Yes, I listen to Live 105's (105.3 in San Francisco) "The Woody Show" every morning. Its hilarious! If you live in the Bay Area and need some entertainment on the way to school/work, then I recommend you listen to it. Otherwise I listen to 104.9 or my Ipod.
6We listen to the radio allllllll day at work. In my car I listen to my XM radio.
7I listen to classic rock station when I'm in the car but generally I listen to my iPod.
8I am addicted to NPR so yes, I listen to the radio. The only bad thing about listening to your iPod is that you miss the new jams.
9I listen to XM in the car. I've lived here for four years and I don't even know what the local stations are, although Alice Cooper apparently has a show on one of them.
10i listen to the morning show on the way to work and imeem during the day or my ipod. i'm a good mix of radio and digital.
11it can get lonely commuting to and from school. so sometimes i just need someone to "talk" to me.
12NPR podcasts is what I listen to the most.
13I have a long commute so I'm always listening to the radio. Besides that, not really...
14No. But I listen to Pandora, and some college radio stations.
15I listen to the radio at work but it isn't even a station that I like. It is one of those work friendly stations that plays that same old $hit.
In my car, I listen to my ipod and I could be listening to music or podcasts.
At home, I will listen shuffle my iTunes library or listen to music on Pandora.
16I listen to NPR mostly, sometimes the local blabbers to see what they're ranting about....
17yes!
18I don't listen to the radio anymore because they play the same crappy songs over and over again--there is no individuality or novelty in it anymore.
But regarding the RIAA wanting to charge radio stations for playing songs....someone on the Wired site pointed out that the Onion called this one back in 2002--but back then we thought it was a joke.
19Here is the Onion article--http://www.theonion.com/content/news/riaa_sues_radio_stations_for
20In my husband's car and on my alarm clock I like to listen to Jack FM because no DJs. I also like to listen to Jonesy's Jukebox on Indie 103.1 in my car.
21You said it in the first paragraph -- too many commercials and the same songs over and over!!! I dread when I have to listen to the radio..I usually put in cd's, play my iPod, or listen to XM..it's truly great
22Always listen to the radio in the car!
23The only time i listen to the radio is in the car. Anywhere else i use my ipod
24I download podcasts for my favourite shows from the BBC.
25;p
Does satellite radio count? I listen to Sirius most of the time while driving for music and also traffic updates. I also listen to news. But at home, I'm either listening on the music channels on TV or if I am online, I listen to Pandora or my playlists in Imeem
2690% of my music listening time is spent on my ipod. The other 10% I spend listening to the local NPR station. They proved me with my traffic, weather, and news fixes, not to mention some excellent classical programming (since my classical library has only a small presence on my ipod).
We used to have XM radio, which I would use for Bob Edwards and MLB games, but we didn't use it often enough to justify the expense.
27I rarely listen to the radio. It seems like radio is tons of commercials and then the same 10-15 songs over and over.
28XM! i got it in my car and i am so into it. there is a punk rock channel and the first time i turned it on i heard nofx and then operation ivy its the best
29i listen to the radio in the car, while on public transportation or whenecer i have to wait in line and dont have my ipod.
30I do both! but I usually only listen to radio when I'm in the shower or on the road (when I forget my ipod fm transmitter). When I'm away at school I like to listen to Whoopi's morning show and I like listening to the local dj's from my town (they are so funny)and it streams online so its kinda like I'm at home but I'm over 1000 miles away! I don't really listen to the music just the conversations they have!
31I never do, but oddly enough, today I did. Sick of my cds in my car right now.
32I sometimes listen to the radio @ work, but every other time I listen to my iPod or iTunes @ home or in the car. I have 1550 songs so far (ALL from CD's no illegal downloading) and I love each one
33I listen to NPR in my car because my old tape deck is broken and I'm waiting for the next generation of vehicles to come out before I invest in a new car. If I could, I would listen to last.fm in my car, not old fuddy duddies talking about foreign stuff. All of the other radio stations in CT give me a headache. I don't know who picks out the trash they put on the air these days.
34I listen to the radio at work actually, but only a certain station in London England. I listen to the online streaming at xfm.co.uk. They just play the best tunes. And they usually play tracks from the bands I love before anyone else. XFM just rocks.
35I thought that bands have been getting money when their song was played on the radio. Hm.
I listen to the radio in my car all the time. We just got a new surround sound system, so we hooked up our old receiver and 2 speakers in the dining room. It's kind of nice to have the radio on while I'm cooking, cleaning, or having dinner. During the day, though, I usually listen to internet radio or my own MP3 collection at work.
36It's funny, now that I have XM in my car, I only listen to the radio at work. Sometimes, I don't even listened to it them. I play my MP3 player.
37I like to listen to the morning shows in my car, but I rarely drive to class/work because I like VERY close to the university. Only if its bad weather. Other than that, I'll occasionally flip the radio on if I am momentarily sick of "my" music.
38I listen to the radio during the commute in my car. I have never been much for talking on the radio but now I really do love the morning show on Y98 in St. Louis. They totally crack me up and it is nice to have a laugh on the way to work!
39"biting themselves in the foot" ?! I've never heard that phrase!
Did you mean, "biting the hand that feeds them" or "shooting themselves in the foot"?
I think they're doing both.
Although, they could alse be "putting their foot in the mouth" by making this claim, and it may "come back to bite them."
Isn't the English language fun?
40In the morning, I usually switch between Balthazar and Maria, Sarah and No Name, and the Woody Show. When I am at home, it's all itunes all the time!
41I listen to both the radio and my Ipod, I love music.
42Only in the car
43I always have NPR on my car radio. but when i go out of town its either ipod or books on cd.
44At work and at home it's XM, but in the car it's usually NPR or KFI (AM radio)
45I listen to the radio at work, sometimes in the car when I can't find anything on the pod or xm, and usually while outside (yardwork, bbq's, get togethers)
46I listen to the pod in the house or tune the tv to a video channel.
