Could You Give Up Watching Television?

Not only is it Father's Day, it's also another national holiday — National No More TV Day! Say what?! Yes, today we need to celebrate our dearest daddies and step away from the boob tube as well.

Considering we're supposed to cut television out of our lives for a day — but what about the Tonys? — I can't help but wonder if I could survive without TV in my life, you know like cut it out cold turkey?! I've gone through phases where I haven't watched TV (OK, so I didn't have cable), but I always made sure to bring myself up to speed as soon as I was near a TV and a cable connection.

I guess there's always the option of watching TV online, but I guess that doesn't count, especially on today's national holiday.

What are your thoughts? Could you survive without television? And if not for a lifetime, what about for a day?

And I only say totally because its for one day and I have a DVR. I don't watch much TV now but I have a World Of Warcraft addiction.

I can do it - I go long periods without turning on my TV set at all - but I still prefer to have a TV so I can watch the things that I want to.

The chief reason for getting the tv, though, was the built in DVD player. A lot of the time I watch DVDs instead of whatever might be airing. Partly because I never remember to follow the schedules so I remember when things are on, partly because by the time things make it to Denmark - there's a high probability that it's already out on DVD in the UK.

I could. I only ever watch TV when something's on - Lost, Grey's Anatomy, Heroes - so I could easily just download them.
In the other hand, if you asked if I could give up the internet, I'd desperately cling to my laptop and start crying. That I just could not do.

I could get by without watching broadcast/cable television since nearly every show can be downloaded and I can rent or buy DVDs.

I could easily give it up, but I had to laugh because the TV was on as I read this post (and still is).

i have cable tv included in my rent but we haven't used it to watch tv in many, many months. I watch tv shows online or download them. these days, i only watch Dr. Who and BSG, anyway. I didn't watch tv at all for about 3 years (including online) when i first moved out of my mom's place...so yeah, i can totally live without it!

I normally don't watch TV when I'm traveling for work and such, so one day wouldn't kill me. When I get home from being on the road, though, I have DVR marathons of my favorite shows.

There is so much more than watching television. There's reading, listening to music, etc.

I think I could give it up for a long while. Sometimes I get really busy so I can't watch it anyway. If I miss anything I just check it out on the Internet on my laptop, while in route to wherever I'm headed.

Watching TV relaxes me but when I have tons of books to read, I can go without watching TV for a week.

I don't watch much TV anymore. I guess I participated in No TV day without realizing it today.

Now if only I would stop wasting so much time in front of the computer, I'd get some housework done!

I canceled cable a few years ago due to financial reasons and haven't looked back. I've been fine without NBC, CBS and ABC too, which I never could have imagined. The real benefit is that I now have time to read, exercise or surf the 'net. I just Netflix shows and movies when I want to watch TV. I couldn't imagine living without TV but it really is a nice alternative.

I haven't had a TV for over a year. I still watch my favorite shows over the internet, but during the summer, it's pretty easy to even go without that.

I cancelled my cable about two months ago. Now, I watch series I really enjoy on DVD when I want to. Other times, I listen to audio books for entertainment. I get way more done now.

during highschool i basically gave up TV (Conan was the only thing I watched) so I had more time to do homework, read books and thats when I wasn't as big of a procrastinator like now. Now I only watch like 3 shows(since its summer) but I can pretty much download them later/ watch online. I'm more of a tv on dvd type of girl. I couldn't live without my DVD player or the internet!!!

my parents are tv junkies so I don't think they could survive no TV!

I already have given up most tv. I TIVO 2 soaps and a couple design and fashion shows. Other than that, I watch some sports. I'd rather play Wii that watch television.

i'm a writer and i love a great script so i'm gonna always be a tv person. but i have a life and i read tons of books (my personally library is pretty impressive), listen to music at work all day, volunteer on a regular basis, play organized sports, workout, write my own stuff, take ballet and belly dance, play video games and a host of other things. you can still have a life and watch tv!!!!

I guess it depends on how long and where I was!
When I was backpacking through Europe for 3 months I honestly only watched it a couple of times and that was to just catch up on the news and maybe watch a World Cup game here and there!

A day? Yes. Longer, no. Unless I'm traveling to a foreign country. But even then I kind of like checking out what other cultures have to offer on the boob tube.

Wow I'm surprised to see this many people without TV! YEAY for us. I haven't watched actual TV in years. I rent DVDs of TV shows occasionally- but only select old American shows like Cagney and Lacy and Golden Girls and BBC shows are worth my time. I can watch some dumb show like lost if I ever get bored in the year 2020 or something. Commercials (and skipping through commercials) suck and I won't pay anybody for the "privilege" of dealing with them. I already have enough of that with the internet. Most of my family and people I know have the TV on 24/7 though.

I don't have tv in my dorm. It was okay, but I started to spend too much time on net... Heh. I can handle the situation now better Laughing out loud

I'm back at home for the summer. Both of our tv's got broken last weekends. How in earth can that happen, they are both even relatively new!? I'm not missing on anything, I have gotten used to not watching tv. My dad on the other hand is going bonkers, he needs his daily dose of news. He is not internet-era person and can't just check them from internet like I do.

I love having the TV on. I seriously have it on when I'm at home from the time I'm awake until I go to bed. I can give up my internet for a few hours in a day in, but I can't not have the TV
