Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference kicked off this morning at the Moscone Center with Steve Jobs' keynote speech, and thanks to Gizmodo's live coverage, I was able to be a part of the minute-by-minute action. The latest and greatest iPhone was finally announced and it's jam-packed with goodies galore. Available in 8GB (black) model for only $199 and a 16GB (black or white) model for (yay!) only $299. The 3G iPhone has thinner edges than the first iPhone, comes with a full-plastic back, a flush headphone jack (phew!), and improved audio quality and battery life.
It also includes fun stuff like built-in GPS, support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync, and access to the new App Store. The iPhone 2.0 software will be released in early July and is free for all iPhone owners and $10 for iPod Touch owners!
For more info about the iPhone 2.0 software, just read more.
Additional neat iPhone 2.0 tools include an eBay app called Auctions that helps you search for new items, place bets, and browse through pictures belonging to various auctions. There's also an app called Loopt — a social networking tool with location-based services, a TypePad app that allows you to create blog posts with photos, medical apps for doctors so that they can show CT or PET scans on the iPhone, full iWork document support (view iWork docs on your iPhone) as well as parental controls. With so many apps at your disposal, the iPhone is truly going to be a revolutionary all-in-one cell phone. Stay tuned as we further explore all these amazing technology tools!

so hmmm, anyone wanna buy a brand new blackberry curve? hahaha
1man, I feel real sorry for any other mobile phone compay.
2YAYY!!! I am getting one now.
3I want an upgrade!!
4I want to upgrade mine...I want to see a white one in real life, so I can determine how badly I have to have it...
5i wonder how the contract is going to be like for us who already got the old iphone? Do you think we have to sign up for another 2 years????
6do i really want to get a new iphone? i dont want to be a slave to technology, but faster internet is a definite plus! edge is really slloowww. for the 199 price, its not too shabby
i could prob get $150 for my old one and upgrade for $50
7ooh I want one! I was following the keynote on this live blog and I was so excited. I will definitely watch it tonight to see what is going on with the new features. $199 is not bad at all,
!
8I didn't buy the first iphone. I knew it would get better. I would run out and get it now but I have this problem of my whole family and most of my friends are on Verizon. So it is free to call them and for them to call me. Now I would cost them minutes. And they just all got on Verizon. I am just torn!
9Yah I already have a friend who is gonna buy mine for 100 and then I'll get the new one- I'm totally getting the white one!
so pumped.
10i keep saying, ooh, yeah, I'll definitely get it now. But then I remember how much it costs extra for the data plan every month...
11I am still not blown away by the iPhone
12I'm excited about the new phone and will definitely get it but I wish there were a few things apple would do.
1. accept trade-ins of original iphones and issue a discount or gift card
2. add the following features: cut/paste, turn by turn directions (although will probably be able to get this through a 3rd party app), drag/drop
3. improve the camera
4. add front camera
oh well, the kool-aide still tastes good. I'll keep drinking it.
13Yay! How do you upgrade to the new one if you already have the old one???
14The current model of the iPhone will also be getting things like the eBay application (all applications in the new App Store) and things like Active Sync when the new update rolls around.
The new phone basically adds 3G and GPS. Also adds $10 more a month for unlimited 3G internet.
15I wonder if the iPod touch is getting an overhaul also since they are based on the same platform?
16I'd love to get one. But my LG 8600 is still perfectly good so I won't for a while.
17The only thing stopping me from buying an iPhone is AT&T. Their service out here is not very reliable.
18I'm actually not that impressed with the 3g iPhone, but I will probably still buy one. At $199 it's really not a big deal at all. I plan on keeping the 1st gen iPhone though. I'll keep it jailbroken, and try out the appstore on the 3g model.
19and it comes in white!
20I was underwhelmed by this announcement. The new phone has 3G and GPS. That's about it. Sure it might be faster to load a web page, but typing on the virtual keypad will still be slow. The phone is cool, don't get me wrong, but it's not really that much better than other phones. It just has different features. It's a fun phone, not really a smartphone.
The new apps will be the best thing coming out. But you won't need a 3G to access them. I think its wise to let Apple fanboys test out the 3G on AT&T to see if it lives up to the hype before you upgrade from your current 2.5G iPhone.
Google Maps for Mobile works just fine for me. Not sure I really need GPS.
21Wow...awesome! It does make me a little sad that I stood in a very hot line for my $499 8GB last summer (even though I did get a shuffle for the gym with my $100 rebate! ...still loving my phone and will stay with Apple as my celly for the long haul!
22all my excitement for the bb bold just flew out the window at record speed! iphone here i come! i'll learn to like the lack of keyboard
23does anyone know if the new iphone has turn by turn navigation? I mean i know it has gps but will it aso incorporate the turn by turn navigation?
24zaianne: it has that now - so i wouldn't think that would go away.
i cannot wait until july 11th!!!!!
nlj: well you can get all those apps right now with jailbreak, though i know most people don't do that. And i don't think you understand how amazing 3G is! Have you ever tried to use Edge? it is so painfully slow.
25ohkate: do you have an iphone now? do you use the built-in googlemaps? have you ever looked up directions it?
The current iPhone 1.0 has turn by turn directions built-into it via google maps
26I have the current iphone. which will be obsolete once the new one comes out, and I do know how the directions work on the current google maps, where they do have a list of the directions, (like where to turn and all that), my questions was more of if the new model will have more like a turn by turn navigation where you can hear it go "turn left ater 5 miles" blah blah blah, so i wouldn't have to keep looking at my phone to know where and when to turn and cause an accident.
27I hate you Steve Jobs.
28I didn't get one a year ago, now I do!
29I have been waiting for this!! Heck I just put down July 11th as a day off of work. I'm getting me an Iphone LOL
30Camera, Steve, Cameraaaaaaaaaaa
Great. I
guess Bosnia and Herzegovina will be the last country where it will arrive officially, but as always will be available on black market...
Anyway, Croatia is in the list of the lucky countries
The best new feature is improved sound and normal headphone jack! 3G is not even available by mobile services here, and I can see how great it is for countries that have normal operators who this service.
Anyway, plastic? Isn't that a little cheap? ohh right, the price is cheap now
I do like the sync over the air
and other stuff too
31I'm really worried that the lines will be crazy. The lines were crazy when they were $600, why wouldn't you buy one for $199?
I am excited, and I get exasperated by people who aren't impressed by the iPhone or complain it doesn't have whatever feature they want. It's just a completely amazing product, years ahead of anything else on the market.
32Now i wanna get one!
33I think I will wait until the next model comes out before I get a new iPhone. My current one is fine and I don't need GPS...I lurve Google Maps just as it is.
34I'm so bummed I have to put my wedding first despite it being sooooo cheap.
35CrazySexyCool--the Touch will be able to use 2.0's platform for 10 bucks.
Zaianne, you're in a contract with AT&T, not for the phone, so upgrading your phone doesn't affect the contract, since you're remaining with AT&T. I've had several phones with them, and it doesn't matter.
I'm not sure if there will be any upgrade offers for current 1.0 owners, but that's what I'm hoping for! You'll see it blaring here if that gets announced.
36I've gotta earn me some monies and get me an iphone one of these days...so cool!
37My boyfriend is glad I made him wait a few generations to get one. I am personally satisfied (for now at least) with my phone that basically just, you know, makes calls.
38"I think I will wait until the next model comes out before I get a new iPhone. My current one is fine..."
ditto. the news made me sad, it is so cheap now... but I can't imagine getting rid of something that is perfectly fine b/c something new came out. I just waited and waited, past xmas, to make sure nothing came out in Jan like ppl were expecting.
my mom is now going to have a cooler phone than me for 1/2 the price.
39Yeah, I think I'll be getting the white one!!!
I heard that you have to get a new contract even if your already with AT&T. I think thats part of the deal in how and why they made the phone cheaper.
40Hmm, I wanna know exactly what this new contract entails and about how much I'd have to pay. If it isn't insane, then I am SO IN. I didn't get the first iPhone, but I've been lusting.
41It's flashy... but it still doesn't make me want to get that over the Blackberry Bold. My husband will be getting the new iPhone though... so I guess we'll have the best of both worlds.
42It makes me want an iPhone but I don't like AT&T and I'm not a huge fan of Apple gear.
43Also I have the tendency to drop my phone a lot. :/ I don't want to risk it.
Plus I like phones that are compact and less wide.
ohkate - I totally agree with you. They need to do add some of these things.
I am thinking of upgrading but part of me feels like I am not 100 percent happy with the announcement. I have one more week to renew my .Mac account and I am wondering if I should. Sigh...
44Yes! My current phone is a P.O.S. so after it's released I'll read reviews and make my final decision.
45For everyone asking about gps:
46http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/09/tomtom-already-has-iphone-navigation-software-ready-to-roll/
i wonder how much it'll go for in australia.... its still TBA
tho i'm not really looking to get one. i;d just like to know. i really want the SonyEricsson X1!!!!
47To follow-up on the contract questions, it sounds pretty vague, but there's a possibility you may have to extend or renew your contract. Personally, I think I'm in a contract for life with AT&T anyway, it's good service (in the Bay Area anyway), and I'm sure I'll have the iPhone for another 2 years. Silver lining!
48bout time it got a GPS
49I knew they would come out with a cheaper one. That's what I hate about technology... something better and cheaper is always bound to come along.
I don't like how apple obsessed this site is... I think iphones are cool.. but the whole craze is a little much
