Scientific American has a tutorial on how to spot a doctored photo, which is really interesting when applied to timely news photos, but for this gossip junkie, it doubles in interest when you use it to spot photoshopped celebrity photos! In the new Sex and the City movie, Carrie is swayed into doing a magazine photo shoot with two words: "Vogue airbrushing." I won't lie to you, my vanity perked up when I was first learning Photoshop, because I was thinking "Yessss! No more zits!"
If you don't do what you can to look your best while taking the photo, you know you have post-pic options. Though I have yet to erase my own blemishes with Photoshop, I have fixed red-eye and offered my skills to friends who have complained about unflattering photos of themselves.
So, spill: Have you used your Photoshop skills to fix a photo of you, or had someone do it for you?

When our daughter was born, I brought her home from the hospital in the same sleeper all three of her brothers had worn. We took a picture of her with the boys for her birth announcement. Unbeknownst to me, my husband decided that the blue sleeper wasn't appropriate, so he photoshopped it and changed it to bright pink...and ended up altering the boys' shirts so they would look good with it!
1I usually do color enhancements on my photos (or just artsy photoshop effects), and the occasional zit zapper...but only for my professional picts. I don't touch my non-pro picts (well, my webcam ones b/c I hate the grainy look).
There's nothing wrong with it as long as you don't change your entire appearance.
2Yes, I've photoshopped myself, but I took it a few steps further and photoshop some snakes on my head and give myself demonic glowing eyes.
3I wanted to learn how to make my pictures look better but i didn't pass them off as unedited
4I've adjusted the color so the photo looks better and gotten rid of blemishes on the rare occasion I have one.
5Yes, I am fixing all my photos, and I do it for everyone who asks. My profession involves a lot of photoshop on people. For example, when I do the album cover design, singers are very demanding on that
6Um, how about a choice that says "No, I've never done it and don't ever want to"
I think our world is already inundated with images that aren't real and are unattainable that I won't go ahead and apply those standards that I detest to my own life.
7I change the color to improve the look and clarity of an image that didn't look quite right. I also try to give my digital images a Lomo look. I have only airbrushed zits but to me that is the same as fixing red eye or putting on makeup. If it is a real candid picture I usually leave it alone, unless the lighting is really bad.
8I've never had to photoshop myself. But I have read in plenty of other places that people do it all the time.
9all. the. time. it's one of the main applications of my education as a graphic designer. i fix flyaway hair, remove red eye (which I get all the time) and smooth out my phantom double-chin that only shows up in photos. personally, i hate bad pictures of myself, so if there's anything i can do to improve them, i'm all for it.
10Yes- Always. I never print a picture that hasn't been retouched in some form or fashion.
I'm a Worth1000 junky, that probably explains it.
11i've never tried to make myself look better but i have added myself into pictures at events i couldn't attend. then i email them to the people who were there and talk about how great we all looked in the pic we took together. i know, dorky! but i touch up the overall pics for general aesthetics.
12absolutely. just to get rid of blemishes though. they're not there all the time anyway! i've never done any major virtua
13Oh yeah... Not too often myself, but I did photoshop the picture that was used for my school ID. Mainly because there weren't supposed to be shadows behind me, but I went a little overboard maybe.
I've photoshopped tons of pictures for my mom... mostly her friends but some relatives too. Whitening teeth, removing specular highlights, removing wrinkles, making skin look healthier, adding makeup... I've done it all.
14I have acne, and while usually I go natural, I saw some pictures of me from a wedding and it was really apparant. So on a couple photos I had to shop it out. I'm too lazy to do it all the time, but I really don't like how I look in photos now.
15i love to change the contrast/brightness & hue/saturation
16I on;y know how to do simple things like, red eye and brightness.
Geek you should do a post on the ins and outs of photo shopping, I wish I knew how to do a few fun things on it.
17I'll admit it, I do it sometimes. Especially if the pic is going up on some place that old friends will see it. I wanna look as hot as possible.
18I tweak the lighting usually. Sometimes because the lighting sucks and sometimes because I want the picture to look artsy. I've never altered a body part or anything though. I've never even tried to shop my acne lol.
19Usually just to fix red eye... occasionally to remove a blemish. Otherwise, I prefer to leave it be. If I don't like the way I look... it's more motivation to change it.
20Haha! I photoshop myself so much I can't remember which pics are pshop'd and which aren't.
21I rarely photoshop pics of myself other than the occasional red eye removal. Typically if I photoshop a picture of myself it is to add a caption, or object for humor. One time I photoshoped a picture of myself to get a mirror in a mirror effect just because I thought it would look neat.
Most of the time when I am using photoshop it is to create web graphics, seamless textures, or some other form of art work.
22Hell yes! Usually it's just a little tinkering with coloring and contrast. I don't think there's anything wrong with it.
23my boyfriend is the photoshop expert. i usually don't do that much with it because i never print pictures anymore.
24I just change the lighting. Other than that, nothing else.
25i actually do it to almost everyone of my pictures. my friends always tell me how photogenic i am. oh well
26not that i recall.
27I photoshop pretty much every picture I know I'm going to share with a bunch of people: graduation pictures, Facebook photos, you name it. Why should celebrities have all the fun?
28When I was younger, I wish I could do it because people knew how to make themselves look like super models! Now, I would never do it, but if I want a photo that needs to be enhanced, I'll ask my boyfriend. I don't ever want to retouch pictures of myself, but I would love to retouch pictures of scenery that were white washed or whatever from the sunlight.
29I remove blemishes, redeye and occasionally will lighten up under my eyes if they look baggy.
30I kinda do it for everyone in my pics like my mom, dad, and me. I take out my zits and smooth out their wrinkles
31Every photo on my computer has passed through photoshop. 24/7/365!!!
32oh man, totally guilty
33Electronic Botox, I do it all the time.
34Eh... yeah - but ofcourse!
I try to keep it to a minimal. Sometimes I do it to make me feel better. Sometimes I feel like I don't need it.
35no photoshop but I have cropped certain things out and changed to B&W to hide my pale skintone a few times!
36yeah I have done it many a times, infact i am quite good looking even used my pics for many of the roulette gambling site and for finance sites. As suggested by my husband.
37Nice strategy to become famous naa... lol !
