I remember looking at my old tube TV and thinking what a sad, old, honkin' piece of old technology it was. Like Richard Simmons, I wanted to drop the unneeded bulk and upgrade to the skinny model: The Flat Screen. I eventually did it, with a 50-inch Sony that's all I dreamed it could be.

I'm not the only flat screen enthusiast — Martha Stewart, all-important doyenne of aesthetics, recently gave the new Sony OLEDs a rave review: "I like it." With an endorsement like that it's no wonder that flat screens are making a splash as decor, and let's face it, it's the shape of the future and we'll all have flatties eventually. Do you have yours yet?

I was raised without television, so the sight of a TV in the living room makes me cringe (that is what our "office/game/tv/sewing room is for). However, I could not turn down the sleekness and beauty of an offer to add one to the living room. It actually looks really good!
2i just bought a 47" toshiba regza for my wii and netflix watching. love it!
3nope. Getting a flat screen TV would require that I replace my entertainment center too. And that's far more money than I need to spend right now. Besides, I'm perfectly fine with the video quality of my CRT.
4Flat screen, yes. Flat panel, no.
5nope. can't afford one. and everytime my old tv dies, somehow i just end up getting someone else's old tv b/c they're getting a new flat screen.
6I have a flat screen Samsung but it's not flat panel.
7My husband really wants a flatscreen in the living room, but our cat's favorite perch is on top of the TV - he has a great vantage point from there and can look out the window. Charley [our cat]is forever dangling his tail down onto the tv screen, and when we say "Charley, tail!" he lifts it right back up. I keep saying to my husband, "But Charley won't be able to sit on top of a flatscreen tv and look out the window" to which he responds, "I don't care! I'm sick of watching Charley's tail on tv!"
8i have always wanted a flat screen so I guess now that I just moved into my own apartment. I'll work towards getting one.
9We're waiting until the day we decide to get cable. I think a really expensive flat screen would look pretty ridiculous with an antenna sticking out the top.
10i'm not understanding why some of you are saying you have a flat screen but not a flat panel? unless you have a projection?
11@TidalWave - some CRTs have flat screens (vs curved screens). I have one of those. Flat panels are what LCDs are called - where you have a flat TV with an LCD/plasma screen.
We'll be getting a flat panel within the next year or so for the living room. Our living room tv is only 3 years old. We bought it when I broke the older one and before flat panels came down in price.
We do have a small flat panel in our bedroom.
12I as well have a flat screen but not flat panel.
TidalWave- a lot of older tvs actually have curved screens and before flat panels were taking over the market they had flat screens, where the actual surface is flat but its still a bit ol' crt tv behind it. I think most tv's today are flat screen but when we bought ours its was a new thing, not having a curved screen, not sure what the difference is really, hehe, just hype we bought into to buy something a bit more expensive, hehe.
brooklybee- when we switched our computer monitor to a flat panel our cat had a hard time remembering that there was nothing left for her to lie on, we had a few funny/scary moments where she was all excited and tried to jump on the monitor but there was nothing there. Be warned when you do switch
13yeah okay but it's still a crt basically. it is still huge!
14Not having a TV has kept me safe from having any first hand experience viewing reality shows and other flotsam. Two or three minutes spent on this site a couple times per day arms me with all the pop culture knowledge I need to participate in pop culture chit-chat.
15flat screen, not flat panel.
16I bought one last year and hardly watch it.
17I got a 47" Sharp w/ a free Bluray player from a special at Best Buy. Expensive but definitely one of the best purchases ever. I adore it.
18I personally think they're ridiculous - I don't understand the need for a TV with better graphics when tv shows just keep getting worse and worse....
Both of our tvs were free from friends and family and they work just fine.
19flatscreen CRT. We are waiting to finish our built-ins before upgrading to the panel.
20My bf and I just bought a sony flat screen, and we love it!
21I'm really confused at all the people who don't own a nice television because they don't want tv shows.
I don't watch tv either but I want my movies to look good! and i want my video games to look good
Who cares about tv shows if you don't have hd anyway.
22Nope, just a tube.
23I convinced my mom to buy a 42" plasma about 4 years ago when I was living at home, and got completely spoiled off of it, so when I moved into my own place, I got a 38" Philips LCD. I actually prefer the slightly 'smaller' size because it fits into the room much better. So, while it's still quite generous, it's not an overbearing presence.
24i live with my mom...we're going to get upgraded soon. we have the tv stand already - just need the actual tv!
25i sadly can't imagine my tv life without it.

We have a flat screen HDTV! Honestly, I was one of the naysayers that thought life was just fine with a tube TV. But that big screen HDTV really transforms the movie-watching/gaming experience. I have a hard time going back to watching anything on my little tube TV in my office.
28I work in television, and see professional broadcast quality all day everyday. It's my job, I'm a video editor. Plus I see HD video pretty much every day too. So I couldn't stand going home to a crappy 20+ year old tv (it was in my parents bedroom when I was a child, that's how old). So my bf & I bought a flat screen, flat panel television in May, but I refused to pay the high price for cable when there wasn't ANYTHING on in the summer. So we suffered with an antenna until September when new shows premiered. We watched a lot of Netflix that summer!
When I finally did sign up for cable I went all out and got HD. And I say everyday, HD is worth every penny. My friends make fun of me, because I mention things like the color being off on their tvs, or if they are watching a widescreen movie on a widescreen tv, but don't have it formatted correctly, it bugs me! I grab people's remotes when I am at their houses & fool with their tvs ALL THE TIME. I can't help it, it's part of my job!
29Oh after reading the comments, I guess I mean flat panel.. not flat screen. I think.
30The only reason I have one is because my father is a tech geek too but he has more money to burn than I do.
31Giving me old gadgets means he has an excuse to upgrade his own.
uuhh yeah.. and two flat screen computer monitors
32Yep, two flat panels: one 20" LCD for the bedroom and one 37" plasma in the family room. (oh, and two 21" LCD monitors for our office systems). LOVE them. HD is not negotiable any more. I'm totally spoiled.
33Yep, we have a Samsung DLP. Uptown_girl, I'm glad I'm not the only one who is bothered by people's poorly configured TVs. Why on earth would you spend thousands of dollars on a TV if you have the aspect ratio wrong or the contrast off?
I'm going to the HD Expo in Chicago next week and I'm pretty excited about all the HD toys I'll see there.
34I bought mine on Craigslist and got it for a pretty good price — I think I paid $350 for a 36" tv. I use bunny ears to get HDTV broadcasts.
35I do!
36Yes, I have a flat screen tv in my bedroom.
3752" sony bravia. its beautiful!
38Why replace something that's still working well? Well at least that's my policy.
39I love mine. I don't actually watch telly..but like to watch DVDs on it.
40i watch alot of tv from my computer but i'm saving up for one!!!
41Our house has three. Of course all due to my husband! They are nice looking, though.
42my dad bought me my first tv (i've lived on my own for almost 8 years now and never had a tv) this past December. My tv is a 26" flat panel samsung and i use it for movies/tv on dvd and wii game playing! It was on a great sale for only $400 or so down from around $650 ish. I think it is so beautiful, so much better than many other brands i've seen. I liked it so much that i bought an external monitor from samsung that sort of "matches" it.
43Hee, Brooklynbee, that is so cute!
I have a cheap little 15" flat panel. Even a 15" CRT is so huge and heavy. I need all the space saving goodness I can get. Also, I figure the TV would be less expensive than the back problems I'll develop from moving a CRT (yeah, I do move a lot).
My current abode faces a TV signal tower so I get fantastic reception just sticking a coil of copper wires into the TV.
44want one but can't afford it at the moment. plus, i don't really like the way things look in hd/bluray so i wouldn't bother buying that when i do get one. everything looks so fake. like especially in movies the sets look like they are made from cardboard boxes. >.<</p> 45
Yes I do. I have a 42 inch LCD by Vizio.
4647" flat panel, it's excessive but it's gorgeous!
