Whenever hot new products are announced (especially with Apple) we all get really excited and worked into a tizzy. Case in point: the iPhone launch. You most likely forked over your cash before the launch to get your dream gadget preordered, making sure it was in your hot little hands the first day. But the problem with version 1.0 anything is that it's almost guaranteed to be buggy and not have all the features you want, and it's likely to die early.
So if we all know the risk that our beloved gadget won't be all it's cracked up to be, then why do we rush out and snatch them up on day one? One of my pals has patiently waited — well, more like a lion patiently stalking its prey – for the second release of the iPhone, thinking that 3G, a better camera, and streaming video will all be worth the wait. So with the iPhone V 2.0 launching soon, tell me, do you buy first-round gadgets or wait for a second release?

Depends on my cash flow... but i do LOVE some hot fresh gadgets!
1Depends what it is. But I usually end up waiting.
2I am waiting for the second gen iPhone...and I even said the other day I might wait for the 3rd gen...but that probably won't happen!
3i am waiting like hkdkat for a 2nd gen iphone. somethings i can't wait for though. but ultimately, i'm not a stand in line over night kind of girl. i'll just buy it on ebay from the crazy person who did stand in line. the mark-up is similar to a finder's fee in those instances.
4Wait, read about the reviews and possible bugs, then decide.
5Or if it's something like the iPhone, I chose to wait for V 2.0 even before 1.0 came out because you just know Apple was already making the new ones!
I definitely WAIT! It's too much of a risk but even more important than that is, the 2nd generation is usually better AND cheaper! I think the same for cars. That said I've been waiting for the 3G.
6Definitely wait, unless I just absolutely have to have it right then. Working at a software company, I've learned that companies will release products before they are really ready to be released. So it is best to be patient.
7Like linb, I work for a software company -- I'm actually on the QA team as a Software Quality Assurance Engineer. She's absolutely right when she says that companies will release products before they are really ready. The other thing is that it's pretty impossible to simulate every single use of the product. There's going to be some user who tries to do that one thing in a way we didn't think about, and they're going to find a bug.
Despite my (very loud) protests, though, my husband is totally an early adopter, especially if Apple craps it out. So as a result, we get lots of 1st gen products. I just don't buy them.
8These things como in an abusive price on first round, then after a while starts the cuttings and discounts, even on V 1.0. So i definitely wait and don´t buy it on first day avaiable, in same time don´t wait for a second version. Just buy a half-price V 1.0.
9I'm on what you call the "bleeding edge of technology". This means I buy it right away and work out all the bugs so the rest of you can have a nice v2.0
10macgirl - you rock!
I stood in line for 1.5 hours to get my iPhone and don't regret it at all. I love all the attention i got from it from people who hadn't seen one in person.
11It depends on the gadget, I suppose. I bought the iPhone when it first came out, but I am waiting to buy a MacBook Air. I love the iPhone so much, I'm pretty sure I will buy each revision.
12I actually waited a whole year to get the iPhone, even though I wanted the first gen. I didn't see any sense in having a phone that doesn't do 3G speeds when I already had one that did. I can't believe it's been a year though. Time flies!
13I might consider one if it gets an official release here. Currently there's nothing but hacked ones here and I'm not going for that.
14well, i got a wii right away but i don't think it has any bugs?! my friend got his powerbook right away and wishes he'd waited since there are a few problems.
now i know to wait a bit.
15i wish i had that kind of patience.
