I'm bummed that I didn't get to experience Taxi TV when I was in New York — the service, though described by this New York article as annoying and wearing on city's taxi-taking populace, actually sounds pretty cool to me, aside from the apparent high volume and constant ads.
If you could get into the cab and pick what you wanted to watch, rather than be imposed upon by what Taxi TV chooses, I think it'd be awesome — most short cab rides would probably be only enough time for like four really funny jokes on 30 Rock, but whatever. How do you feel about Taxi TV, New Yorkers? Can you actually change the channel, or are you subject to whatever is on?

Oh I never even thought to watch tv shows or anything on it (I never use a cab for too long of distances) but I have used the interactive map to figure out exactly where we were going or to see what else was in the area. It is pretty obnoxious though so we've always muted the sound. Usually the news or something is on when we get in the cab.
1I'm not a New Yorker but I was in NYC and I saw these tvs. I thought it was a neat idea. You can mute the tv when you get on so I'm not sure why you'd be annoyed. I used the map feature when going from one place to another just to see where I was in reference to the hotel.
2sounds kind of dumb. i don't know that i would want my phone conversation interrupted by tv ads. besides, sometimes a taxi ride is a chance to escape from everything else. but, then again, i'm not a new yorker. midwest born and raised baby!
3I get car sick, so I would likely just try to block it out. Whenever I'm in NYC I use the subway though, so yeah.
4If you take cabs enough... it get REALLY annoying and you end up shutting it off immediately, but I must admit that the weather and map features are really cool... but then again I can alway look that up on my Blackberry... so in the end it's a thumbs down for taxi TV here (and I don't even take cabs that often)..
5Soooo.... we didn't get universal cabs with card readers until the TV-in-the-cab thing was introduced. Until this past fall, finding a cab with a card reader in it was difficult at best, so I'm pretty happy that it's easier to pay with my check card now.
Like everybody else, I like the map & weather. I kind of like the news updates. When I get sick of it, I just mute it. I'm a fan.
6It takes away from the classic New York City experience of listening to your taxi driver yell into a cell phone (or in the real old days out the window) in a language you don't understand.
7It's local news and, unfortunately, no 30 Rock
. Some of the features are cool, though, like
recipes from local chefs/bakers, maps (GPS is a little off sometimes though), weather, and, my personal favorite, this one news feature in which they show a video tour of multi-million dollar
condos for sale in the area. It's fun and sad all at once.
8It's a good idea, however every time I try to watch it, I get carsick. Learned my lesson and I always turn it off now.
9I never really take a cab unless I'm coming or going to the airport. But this Xmas on my way back into the city the Taxi I took had this TV in it and my friend and I were like O_O when did this start? All it had on was the local news (channel 7!) and I didn't know if we were allowed to touch the tv so we just left it be.
10i know that a lot of people here don't like taxi tv but to be honest, i take a cab every day to work and i love it. if there were more options for programming, that would be better since it's only changed on a weekly basis unless you're lucky enough to get into a cab that has a different network (there are 3 i believe). in any event - i love it, and there are very few times that i don't get in a cab that has it. 1 out of like 50 trips.
11When I do take cabs here I don't mind it so much the first run through, but if you keep hearing the same stories over and over it gets annoying, as do the ads...but that's why there is a mute button. I like segments where they talk about unknown restaurants around the city. Overall, I'm just glad I can pay with a credit card now when I don't have cash on hand.
12I take cabs relatively frequently (once or twice a week) and I find that these cab tv things are fo the most part, obnoxious and unnecessary. I don't need to hear about the same ABC7 spot 20 times during the ride home, so I usually turn the thing off. Plus, a lot of the cab drivers I have are listening to pretty decent radio (classic rock, and sometimes even BBCnews), so I prefer to listen to whatever they have on.
13I've had a couple of long cab rides since they put in the Taxi TV. It's ABC or NBC news on a loop, and if you're in the cab for more than ten minutes, the stories repeat. It's not even news news, it's mostly feature stories. Can be interesting, and there is a mute button. The GPS is fun to play with. I, however, got really car sick the first time I got in a cab with a TV, and the TV kept showing the Cloverfield trailer, so I'm a little jaded now.
