If you have your computer stocked full of movies, MP3s, files, and applications and hardly ever trash anything, then it's no wonder you get that strange error message that pops up saying that your "disk space is almost full." I'm sure (like me) you've bypassed that little note saying to yourself "yeah, right" or freaked out and had the geek squad on the phone before you could say microchip.

In either case, it's a good idea to get a handle on what you are storing on your hard drive (or hard disk as it's so lovingly called) so those nasty messages don't keep popping up and ruining your fun. I'm a visual gal, which is why I use Disk Inventory X to see what is on my hard drive. It's mapped out so that I understand what a big chunk of space that burned copy of BSG Razor or my entire ELO collection is really taking up. To see why Disk Inventory X holds a special place in my heart, just read more.
Disk Inventory X is not only a great way to get you to delete unused or unwanted files, but it's an awesome learning tool that will help you visualize what 657 megabytes or four gigabytes looks like on your hard drive. Disk Inventory X is free for Mac users, you can download at any time and it's totally easy-peasy to use. Plus, there's a one-minute instructional video that will walk you through getting started, so you don't have to call in the cavalry to save you. It's all gonna be okay. I promise.

Please tell me there's something comparable for PC users?
1Back when I had Windows, I remember a program like this that I had called WindirStat. Looks a lot like the one metioned above, and is PC-friendly. You can download it here: http://www.download.com/WinDirStat/3000-2248_4-10614593.html?tag=lst-1&c...
2sweet. i'm checking mine now...and i watched BSG razor yesterday! did you like it Geek? I was so disappointed...
3Ok I am horrible with computers so my last computer I never use to delete anything and I would ALWAYS get the little urgent button saying I had no space left. Well one day my younger sister was on my laptop and was looking through my files and noticed I had never deleted anything from my temporary files. I had years worth of crap in the folder. I will so get that program. I just got a new computer and I have not put any of my sims games on here because I am scared they will take up too much space.
4k squared:
Thanks so much! It's brilliant!
5The Linux equivalent, and original, is called KDirStat.
6thanks, geek! this is cool!
7I like that, haven't seen it before. Another good app is called WhatSize which you can get for free at macupdate.com. It can show you how big your files are in their directories. So you can see that your User folder has the bulk of your data and then you can drill down into the directories and see how much is on your desktop, in photos, music or documents. Or drill down even more and see exactly how big all the files are. I use this one all the time
8I could really use something like that, I may have to give it a try.
9ooOOOoo neat!
10does anyone know if this installs hidden spyware?
11I believe this utility is Mac only... so no spyware.
