Do you remember those reports last year of certain stores using a secret intranet that reflected different prices in the store, even though the real Internet site showed lower, "real" prices? I've always thought how great an iPhone would be in that situation. No quibbling about what's right and wrong, just the indisputable information, right in your hand.
Well, the other day, I got to take advantage of this! I had bought a pair of shoes last weekend for full price in a store that also has a website. The next day I showed one of my friends the shoes over iChat — to find that they were actually $20 cheaper online. Not one to let 20 bucks go to waste (that's like 12 cups of coffee!), I decided to take my shoes and my receipt to the store to see if I could get a price adjustment. To see how I got it with my iPhone, just read more
So I strolled in there, shoes and receipt in hand, and just in case — I had emailed myself the link to the shoes in case the lower price was questioned. And it was. "Yeah, they're still full price," the cashier said. "Sorry."
I remained calm and respectful, but said, "Oh, really? I just checked the website and they're a new price," and I showed him my phone. He checked out the screen, and once he looked it over, just said, "Ok, 20 bucks back on your card. . . ". I just smiled, but inside I was thinking, "Oh, snap!"
How awesome is that? SavvySugar will be so proud of me!

It's great that you got a discount, but unfortunately, not every retailer will price-match their website. It's always worth asking though!
1those are really cute shoes. glad you told them whose boss!
2yet another reason to cop an iphone when the new version comes out!!
3I'm totally going to try this the next time I'm in doubt about a price.
4I'm confused.
You bought shoes in the store without looking for them cheaper online first. Then you went home, checked the site, and realized you got ripped off in the store. So you go back to the store and say "hey! your online price is [this] and i paid [this], I would like the online store price please."???
Waitaminute you can do this?!!
I would have just returned them in the store and then bought them online.
But I also would have checked the online price first
5Cool!
Go, you!
6Yeah that happened to me just right after Christmas. I wanted this cute pair of heels from Nine West and would have bought it in store if the store was still open when I saw it in the display window. Anyways I got home and checked it out online and saw it was on sale. I figured the one in the store would be on sale too, and I didn't feel like paying S/H chargers so I decided to wait and go to the store again next weekend. Low and behold...when I got to the store...the shoes were full price. I even asked the sales girl if it might have been a mistake, but she said no, it's not on sale. Walked out of the store, took my iphone looked up the nine west site again...made sure it was still on sale there...called up the nine west customer service line and told them the situation. It was awesome, the customer representative called up the store and told them to match the price for me.
7what store did you go to geek?
8Tidal, I was out on a leisurely weekend stroll and happened to see the cute shoes--I didn't go out shopping specifically looking for them, hence, no online research. I showed them to a friend online after I bought them, i.e., not checking to see the price.
This is a big retailer (ok, it was Urban Outfitters
), so I would think that the
prices would normally match and was also super glad (and would expect) that they matched the website!
9Dayam! lemmie photoshop some more stuff on sale and show to the cashier!
10this happened to me at circuit city and my iphone came in handy.
11I've used my iPhone to look up prices while I'm out to see if I can get a better deal online, but I've never thought to check the exact same store's website! I order online 90% of the time anyway, but like you said, sometimes you just see something you want.
I have used my iPhone to show people websites before. I used it to show my veterinarian a product I had ordered to see if the ingredients were safe to use. It really comes in handy!
12I love you Geeksugar
13I really do!!!
Awww, thanks Performita--I love you too!
14oh my gosh. that's really awesome.
15Ok, yet another reason I need an iphone. Just need to wait out my verizon contract!
I learned something today too! Thanks geeksugar! I had no idea the online price would differ in store, I usually don't research before I shop, but now I will.
16Awesome!
17If only you could use your iphone to price check iphones..
18This is why I hate Best Buy. They don't match their own online store price but they'll match some other store like Circuit City! How stupid is that? They also have that other secret site you mentioned with differrent prices. Rip Off!
19I thought there was a big todo about this in the news and it was illegal under the whole "bait & switch" law? Hmmm, not cool. Good for you, Geeksugar. I wouldn't have been as polite.
I had a similar incident regarding price adjustments at Target. I knew that they honored discounts if your item goes on sale within 2 weeks after purchase, but I hadn't done it in a while so I called their Customer Service to check if their policy had changed. The girl who answered said outright that they didn't do price adjustments but when I asked them the next time I went in, they were like "of course". You never know if you just catch a clueless salesperson or if the store is trying to screw you.
20Watch out with target! On numerous occasions their registers did not ring up an in-store sale price. They were really nice about giving me the sale price upon double checking but when I asked when they were going to adjust the registers they said, "i don't know."
21way to go!!
22urban outfitter's website often has better deals online than in the store. i never thought about going to the store to make sure things were the same price. thanks for the tip geeksugar!
23That's exactly why I love my iPhone!
The other day I bought pet food at the pet store.. mid-way through the debit transaction, the machine shut down. I was reluctant to swipe my card again for fear that I had already been charged. So I looked up www.wamu.com and checked my bank statement.. no charge, so I swiped the card again.
