Last week, Heidi and Spencer's separation of gadgets was getting me down, so I now cast my geek-love view on hope and the future: wedding registries! Registries are supposed to be the gifts you and your betrothed choose to start your life together, and you pick what will make your house a home (check out Casa's roundup if you need any help).
In my case, home tech and gadgets figure prominently. My first instinct is that registering for a flat screen TV would be excessive when you consider the price, but considering other things couples register for, maybe it's not so outlandish. Though I've yet to see someone register for a Wii, I say, why not? If you're geeks, then how is it any different than registering for pricey china you may never use? You already saw all my favorite geek items for registries, and though it sounds untraditional, wouldn't a new camera be a perfect way to make memories as a new couple?

we put a camcorder on ours. Didn't get it, but we ended up buying one for ourselves anyway about 6 months later.
1I wouldn't do it. I have some vocal family members who would call me out and call it rude/bratty/not necessary. I would put gadgets that have to do with the house, like a vacuum, kitchen appliances, air filter, etc. I think that wedding registry gifts should be practical necessities.
2times are changing. not everyone has fancy tablecloths and placemats anymore. why would someone want to buy something from the registry [or put it on in the first place!] that you will never use? i would much rather buy something gadgety, something a bit more unconventional, that i knew the happy couple would get some use out of.
3i think it's kinda tacky to register for tvs and game systems and such, but i can def. see where the tides could change in the next few years and it would become acceptable. right now i'm all for registering for house-y gadgets like vacuums and stuff, but flat screen tvs? not so much
4i think gadgets that have to do with family like camcorders or cameras would be fine, but not game systems and flat screen tvs.
5How do TVs and game systems have less to do with family than cameras and camcorders? I love playing DDR with my fiance, and I can easily see us turning Rock Band into quality family time someday. And of course, for either of these games, I nice high quality TV really helps. And that isn't even taking into consideration the idea of something like a family movie night. A TV seems like just as integral a part of a house as a toaster - and probably more often used and appreciated.
I have every intention of registering for a Wii so we can spend some quality time together with me kicking his ass in Wii tennis. I also want one (or more) of those digital slideshow frames. Because then I'd never have to pic which pictures go on the mantle. The idea of a registry is to get those items that will turn your future house into a home. And gaming, movie watching, and gadgetry in general is an integral part of any place we call home.
6I would definitely do it. I mean seriously when will I use the china? Special holidays? Gadgets like the Wii is fun forever! LOL!
7I don't understand. Why not put a wii on there?
Nowadays, most people have been living together for a while and they already have dishes and blenders and bread machines and the like.
8OMG - my honey would LOVE to add gadgets to our registry! He is admant that Best Buy should have a registry too...
9I don't see a problem with it. You have to think couples now live together before getting married and/or people are getting married later in their life. They already have the major house hold items.
10We had a quite a few geeky/tech items on Amazon. But we only got one thing from it, and it wasnt techy.
(I thought people bought stuff from your registry when you get married, but I found out that doesnt always happen. You just dont get anything)
I need a larger external hard drive than a china pattern. Im a little offended by traditional wedding...anything. And find it a little sad that people feel a need to register for bed sheets and salad bowls for their wedding. People need to wake up, get with the times, and register for a digital SLR camera, or a USB drive, or external hard drive. I need those things far more than a silver place setting.
11you'd need a tv right:) Why not? The purpose of a registry is to help the newlyweds prepare for wedded bliss, helping them to furnish their new home together. Why not give them a tv, or even better, a wii and they can have date nights at home:) I think it's cute and sweet, I would definitly love some gadgets!
12My husband and I jokingly put a huge plasma on our registry, and got it! I love my in-laws!
13I don't see why not. I would get so much more mileage out of a television or a game system than a china set.
14Sure, that's how we got an XBox and a couple other things. We also registered for DVD box sets, a shower CD player, and a laptop bag. We don't have room for a set of china, wine glasses, or crystal. We just put what we really wanted on the list, and my (very cool) friends & family got us most of it. But it was also an incredibly informal wedding, I don't know if that matters.
