I obviously love flatscreen TVs, and one thing I have been dying to do with mine is mount it on the wall. So chic! So out of the way! So intimidating! I'm convinced that even if we do figure out the mounting hardware correctly, it won't hold — one bad thing about a charming old apartment? Plaster walls that don't support anything.
So when I saw this new Benno TV stand by Ikea, with a reinforced back to "mount" the TV — no drilling into soft, old walls necessary — I lost it. $140 and no damage to my walls? Score! I know that some of you will say all Ikea stuff falls apart, but it doesn't — well, if you're an Ikea expert like me, you can spot the duds from the winners. That said, I'd have to see this in person at a store, but right now, I'm all over it. What about you?

3I like it, I just wish they still made the bench version for my tube tv. (same bottom half, only slightly deeper and capable of holding up my 250 lb tv) Oh, well, if I had a plasma that's definitely the way I'd go. My landlord would like it better, too.

7LOVE IT! I love Ikea's clean, simple designs. +1 for environmentally friendly business practices. +1 for family-friendly business practices. +1 for not supporting sweatshop labor. +1000 for the amount of cash it saves me to shop at Ikea.
8It looks very modern and cool in the brown/black colour. Not only that, your DVD etc are on a shelf behind tempered glass and the remote works through it. You don't have to have the gear all out on display...hidden is how I like it. I wouldn;t cal it 80's...more 1965 Danish.

the walls in my apartment barely hold the brackets for the curtain rod placed on them!
10Not a fan (not my style) but I agree - my entertainment center, my desk, my dining room hutch and my dining room table are all from Ikea. None of them have fallen apart and all have been owned for 5+ years. Matter of fact, my dining room table & hutch are solid wood. Not that pressed board.

16Its all about context. I had a Victorian home in Scotland, and I dressed it accordingly. I would have shot myself before using IKEA in there.
Saying that...now in Finland, in a very bright, well-lit, clean-lined and very modern place (and with a tight budget, since starting totally afresh) IKEA has been really helpful...as you say you have to "spot" what is a good item, and what is not.
My new black velvet KLIPPAN couch is cheap in price, but looks very nice in the room...and the LACK bookshelves with their spot lighting look fab, especially in the evening..they also make the Trollsta side table which has cute Queen Anne style metal legs. (I had to have it, and if the top ever "Dies" I will recycle the legs onto something else.)
The entire room cost less than 2 of my antique items, and though I still adore antiques (I kept all the bedroom stuff from Britain, even if that room is totally different than the rest of the flat), but "when in Rome"......
I think this is a fine piece but is better in other colours...not a fan of the "fake birch" look, I prefer their items in white, black, brown-black or the funky reds and yellows....this stand in white, on a wall using more of the matching shelving units is very pretty and clean in the right flat.
At the end of the day, I prefer real wood, and antiques, but when practicality is an issue, and if you have a good eye to know what pieces are worth snapping up, then heck...I can't fault IKEA.
17Yeah it's a way better viewing experience when the flat screen is mounted to the wall. Plus it saves space. All you have to do is buy the right tv wall brackets and it should support your flat screen tv, even on plaster walls.
18Great product! We got the black brown wooden base and the black glass panels. It is so simple, so clean, and so out of the way. The black glass panels match our flat screen perfectly so it looks like it's all one customized unit. The great thing is that you can pick which base you want to go with your panels: Whether you want a higher shelving unit with drawers to house your DVDs (like we chose) or a really low-to-the-ground modern bench. At such a great price, I highly recommend this product.
19I have the tv stand, and it's ok. My cable box doesn't fit on the shelves in the bottom drawers, and it doesn't come with any mounting equipment for the tv, but it looks ok. Plus it matches my expedit bookcase/desk perfectly.
