This month's Wired brings you their take on the geek hierarchy β remember when we surmised that there were many different types of geekdom? Well, Wired agrees, and they've offered up six types of geek: The Fanboy (classic Star Wars/Simpsons lover and defender), the Music Geek (think Rob Gordon from High Fidelity), the Gamer (your thumbs are always sore), The Gadget Guy (3G + iPhone = drool), the Hacker (fears the sun), and the Otaku (all Manga, all the time).
Do you fall into any of the categories, or are you a different kind β or a hybrid geek?

Golden Goose
I will openly admit to being a fangirl (although not much of a fan for the things mentioned in the article), a gamer girl (although I don't play nearly as many video games as I used to, alas, the death of my gaming rig *sheads a tear*), and a gadget girl (I only bought the iphone because it was that or my fiance leaves me *only slight sarcasm here*). oh and I'm a closet otaku but that's only because I was born there, love the language and culture, and believe everything japanese is somehow inherently better. hahahaha.
1Music Geek/Fangirl/Otaku/Gamer
2Fangirl and music geek.
3Gamer, gadget gal, and a bit of a hacker.
4I note that gamer needs to be expanded or another type added for non video game games. you know, old fashioned tabletop gaming, card and board games, etc.
bit of a fangirl (star wars/star trek/x-files), a dash of gamer (nintendo only, thnx), a sprinkle of 1337 and a healthy dose of music geek.
5Gamer Music Gadget. Mostly Gadget. I wouldn't say hacker, but I can figure out how to use a new programs and help with users pretty well, but I can't hack.
6i love me my gadgets =]
7A combo of music, gamer and gadget.
8Equal parts Fangirl, Gamer, and Otaku. I think there are also Crafter Geeks, especially for the girls. I am just as obsessed with making things as I am about TV shows, video games, and anime.
9I'm a pure gadget geek and a bit of a hacker lol
10Good point Lindira, What about crafters? I get called a geek all the time for my obsession with craft magazine and trying to make everything out of it.
11I am combo of gamer/gadget with a splash of music
12Gadget/ gamer geek- crafty too!
13Like everybody else here, I seem to be a geek mutt. I'm primarily a FanGRRRL, followed by Gamer, with a touch of Music and Hacker. I'd tread lightly on the Hacker thing though, because I'm not nearly as 1337 as a lot of my friends.
I'm married to a Gadget Guy/Gamer/Fan Boy. So genetically speaking, does that mean our kids will turn out to be some Gamer/Fan combination?
14I've definitely got traits from multiple areas. I can be a total music nerd, fangirl, or gamer depending on what's in front of me (for example, my sister and I speak almost exclusively in Simpsons references). I will say, however, that the gadget geek probably most closely resembles me. I'm always hunting for the next great toy. But I will say that I avoid being an early adopter, usually preferring to wait until some of the kinks are ironed out. I've been burned too many times by unfinished tech.
15I sort of resent the remark that hackers are chronically crabby, condescending, paranoid, and pasty. Why hate on the hackers? The Geek Handbook, though somewhat outdated, is much more positive, accurate, and less sexist.

16I fall under gadget and gamer, I'm obsessed with both.
17where are all the Otaku???? cmon! this is our chance to shine!
18I'm a gadgety/gamity/musicy/fangirly geek :3
19I guess music geek, but I always wanted to be a hacker.
20I am definitely the music geek. My music collection is crazy and it only gets crazier when I go to record stores or I happen to visit relatives with something I might need/want.
21I confess to all of the above to some degree or other. Except the blue wig..it's got to be pink or I ain't leaving the house.
22Even though I'm a girl, I'm the gadget guy. My boss' boss called me "one of those mac people" and then said, you must like gadgets...is it that obvious?
23I am a combination of a few types of these geeks-
24I like some video games (mainly lame ones... I like Elebits haha)
I'm an Asian Studies (Japanese concentration) and International relations double major.. so I have big love for Japan.. but I don't read manga.
I love high-tech gadgets.... if I could raid the Apple store that would be heaven!
etc etc.
!
lol look at this everyone! http://www.brunching.com/images/geekchartbig.gif
geek hierarchy!
25I guess I'm mostly the fan girl but I don't really like the way these are classified...
26Does anyone else think the term "Geekster" is extremely self-contradictory? Is geek really a social scene now?
Urban dictionary defines Scenester as: "a person who tries very hard to fit the stereotype of a certain scene. often having to do with a specific genre of music emo.indie.punk.rock. dresses and acts in a prescribed fashion."
Wikipedia defines Geek as "A person who has chosen concentration rather than conformity; one who pursues skill (especially technical skill) and imagination, not mainstream social acceptance."
Skill is the exact opposite of posing. People who pose, pretend to be skilled if they are not, are extremely lame. I really hope the term "geekster" never makes it to mainstream usage.
27I love my gadgets, and I love my games. Definitely a gadget/gamer geek.
28im a combo for music geek/gamer
29Totally a hybrid: Fangirl (comic book though, not Star Wars) + Gadget + Gamer + Music Geek, but in a film and TV way more than music (which I think is essentially the same thing)
30I'm more of a Movie/TV/Music Geek
31Total movie geek here, with some tv/music thrown in, too. I'm kind of shocked that wasn't an option!
32I'm a gadget/slight gamer.
33What about a professional geek? Being a geek is my job. I don't do much of it outside of work.
34I'm mostly a gadget geek, with some fangirl and a pinch of music geekdom. Used to be a gamer geek, but then lost interest.
35I'm a Fangirl, I love Starwars. and I love gargets too.
36Music, fan, otaku and gaming. That's me!
37I'm a big comic book fan too. Starwars , Strangers in Paradise , optic nerve.
38i'm practically all of the above. and yea crafters!!!!!! ^_^
39I'm such a Otaku and a Gadget girl!
40Erh how about technologies geek
like
webdesign/programming..etc? I'm that, whatever that is.
41I'm an OTAKU, gadget girl, and gamer
42I had to say none of the above. But all my favorite people are geeks of multiple and combined varieties. Myself, I guess I'm a language and art geek. I'm a geek-aholic!
43GADGETS! A touch of gamer, but only MMO's and only because my boyfriend got me addicted. I would also add Internet Geek b/c I'm online a lot, & am an info/research-aholic because of it, and I am an internet-shopper extraordinaire.
44Music/gadget/fangirl/gamer.
45I'm a Fangirl... I love Harry Potter.
46fangirl/music geek/semi-gamer/gadget.
i only play one game (not obsessively)
47a combo of gamer/fangirl. i love music, butu i don't go to many shows or anything since i am so broke, so i don't think i can call myself a music geek.
speaking of games, i just got Fire emblem for Gamecube to play on my wii....yay!!!
48i am definitely a gadget girl
49I'm a mixture of fangirl(obsessed with series), gamer, hacker and gadget girl. Yay!
