Last week, when CNET proclaimed that iTunes is now the top music retailer, I marveled at far how digital music has come.
And then I tried to remember the last time I walked into a store and bought a CD. And I seriously couldn't! It kind of bums me out, too, because walking into Amoeba Records and just browsing to discover new albums or EPs from my favorite bands is one of my favorite things to do.
I don't necessarily prefer to buy music online, it's just so convenient. Truth be told, I love going into a store and physically buying a CD and checking out the album art in my hands instead of just on my computer or iPhone screen, but I have to admit that all my music purchases are on iTunes now. What about you? Where do you buy most of your music?

I am old school I guess... when it comes to my favorite bands, I absolutely need to have the CD. There is a thrill that comes with looking through the artwork and reading the liner notes. That being said, because people don't buy as many CDs these days bands don't spend as much time producing the artwork. But I still rip all of my CDs to my ipod and I rarely put in a physical CD.
1Buy?
2I subscribe to Rhapsody.com so I can stream music- albums and radio playlists, buy music or take it to go on my mp3 player. Best of all worlds. Every once in awhile I'll buy some vinyl and Amoeba music or buy a cd at a show, but mostly I'm on Rhapsody. It rules.
3Kidding, well somewhat kidding anyways. I buy some music at best buy, and some online. People download the rest for me.
4Buy?
5Oops, someone beat me to my comment.
6Stores and Amazon MP3's.
7I need CDs. I tried the digital music thing, but I just couldn't love it like I love my CD collection. I do buy online though. I buy most of my CDs from Amazon.com.
8If it's a band I like, I'll buy the CD, so I still buy in stores quite a bit. I've got an old car and the iPod hook up through the radio is just terrible, so I have to have the CD to listen to in the car.
9Only itunes baby! I'm glad those days are gone where you had to buy an entire cd for $20 and just get 1 or 2 good songs! Now you can get one song you know your gonna LOVE for .99cents can't beat it!!!
10People actually buy it?
11I am never the type to buy or download individual songs. I hate that listening to whole albums has fallen out of fashion.
12i am addicted to itunes, its super easy and fast. the last cd that i bought was robert plant/allison krauss raising sand cd.
13I still only buy CDs, either online or in person. Sure, the first thing I do with them is rip them and copy them to my MP3 player, but still.
I'm iffy about iTunes and some other online music shops because of DRM. I don't have an iPod -- I had a Creative Zen for a while and now I have a Samsung P2 -- so I don't know if I could even get the best of iTunes.
Guess I still like to own CDs.
14I do buy actual cd's of bands I love, otherwise I download.
15My first mp3 was the Sony Bean so I used Connect (which is now defunct). Then I started on iTunes and have been there ever since.
Of course I am itching to get this: http://teamsugar.com/user/wickedcupofjoe/geekgear/1534244 and install it and get my mixed tapes onto my iPod! Pause and record clicks and all! LOL
16Most of my music is purchased from Napster for my MP3 player. But I will occasionally purchase a cd at a store like Target.
17Like others have said, if it's a band or artist I really like I head to the store to get the physical cd!! A bit more exciting...nothing like popping it into the cd player as you drive home!
Otherwise, I just buy it online.
18Itunes. The last cd I bought was in July 2005 however I can not remember the name (it's been that long, lol.)
19I love to have the physical CD of bands I love- and having just the singles or the tracks I initially liked would miss out on some of my favorite songs.
20Plus, some of my personal best music finds have been trolling through the stacks at Soundgarden or Record and Tape Traders.
I'll listen to streaming sites like Last.fm and Pandora. When I hear an artist I like, I'll use a music search engine like seeqpod or songza to listen to more of that artist's music. If I find some songs I really like, then I'll buy them on itunes or amazon digital.
21My assistant (Dorothy with Toto) and I buy ours in Kansas home of the most unbelievable comeback in recent history.
22I mostly buy music on iTunes, but if it's an artist I really love, I will buy both the digital and the hard copy.
23i don't have CD or DVD cases anymore because of limited space, so i just acquire music digitally (as well as movies, or just not at all). I listen to music on http://www.newmusiccanada.com and the CBC radio 3 podcast, plus get people's recommendations from some online communities to figure out what to get. i always buy an album or 3 from the CD booth at the Vancouver Folk Festival, though, since i know the artists make a lot more money that way and the artists are generally unsigned or their music is hard to find. I don't go into music stores much anymore, and when i do i am always shocked to see what kind of crap is popular these days. sad.
24I haven't had physical CD's since iPods came out. OK, well since the Creative Jukebox came out, but I generally don't speak of such things.
25One of my favourite sources is eMusic... You subscribe and get a certain number of tracks a month. I get 30 a month, which if you pick the right stuff, can add up to five or six albums. All for 8GBP. They've got some proper left-field stuff...
26There's no iTunes Store in Brazil:(( I couldn't even upgrade my iPod Touch...
27I still buy CD's sometimes, because it's not so easy to find new brazilian music albums online. But mostly, I download what I want (torrents).
I buy online. I normally don't buy full cds, just singles I like. My SO will buy a whole album, however some of the bands he likes won't release on Itunes, so we go to the store for those.
28When I like a particular song from an artist but not their general work, or just want to test out their style, I'll download a single on iTunes. I like downloading music videos there too, and TV shows, but that's beside the point. But I do like the physical-ness of an album, so when I want the whole CD I'll buy it in a store.
29I still buy CDs from my favorite bands.
30My husband I both had TONS of CDs from the time before i-Pods and i-Tunes.
Even with
de-duping our CD collection and purging tons, we still have more CDs than we have space. I've started digitizing a lot of our CDs and then getting rid of the actual CDs - I bought an external
hard drive to store/back up our digital music collection. Takes up WAY less space than all those CDs - space being crucial in NYC!!
31Used CD stores are awesome, and often cheaper than buying online, plus you can get rid of those CDs from your foolish youth that you now hate.
32buy music? people still do that?
i'll buy music again when corporations stop telling me what i can and cannot do with the music that i rightfully paid for. no drm's for me!
33While I could answer "equally online and in stores," that would not be accurate in this context.
The poll seems to equate online and electronic. I do not buy electronic music at all. Sound quality is horrible if you're actually a music fan.
If more sellers offered flac files (and players played 'em) I might buy some electronic copies. As is, I like buying real CD's from the few physical stores remaining, or ordering those real CD's from online stores (for stuff I can't find in-store).
34I
35Ack. Didn't read my non-alpha characters. I "heart" iTunes. There.
36as much as I love the convienance of itunes, there is something completely different when I buy a cd at best buy. I remember when I was in high school, I had to clean the entire house to get a brand new 311 cd (and it was totally worth it). I buy cds because I can just keep them in my car and not go crazy trying to find a song while driving 80 mph. And plus, the transitions between songs on some cds makes me so happy
37i only buy my music from iTunes. the reason being, it's quicker, simpler and easier. i don't own a stereo, only my iPod and computer, so i don't really see the point of buying cd's.
38Yeah I'm totally poor,so when they ask us to "buy" music for what a dollar per song..?Thats ridiculous.Honestly I don't know anyone who even bothers buying it anymore anyways.Eh..
39I won't download any of the programs that let you get songs for free, so I buy all my music.
I like that with iTunes you can purchase individual songs and then 'complete the album' without having to pay for that song again.
It comes in handy when a single is released before the full album or if I'm not sure about a particular artists music (if I've never heard of them before).
