Totally frustrated because your workplace or school has put a permanent ban on Gmail? In my opinion this is completely ridiculous. How will people access the Google tools they really need like their calendars and to-do spreadsheet lists? Nonetheless, there might be a solution. Here are some helpful hints that are worth a try. 
- Use different web address combos like http://mail.google.com, https://mail.google.com, http://www.gmail.com, https://www.gmail.com, http://gmail.com, https://gmail.com, or http://googlemail.com as your office might block specific URLs.
- Configure your mail program to access Gmail through POP
so that your mail program at work or school can connect to Gmail. For instructions on the Gmail site, click configure email client list. - Access Gmail through Google Desktop. By downloading the desktop, it will bypass direct links to Gmail although this method may be banned from the office as well.

You can also access ANY blocked site from work or school from a special address. I don't know that I should mention it though for fear of eveyrone catching on and blockign those sites...hmm. private message me if you want to know. and, I promise they work!

2At my college they blocked Myspace, after it happened the computer were really empty.
My work banned mail.yahoo.com, so what we did was go to the Ireland/UK/Swedish/Etc Yahoo home pages and check our mail from there. Only caveat-- pick a country whose main language is English
3My work did that too, but they had this IT guy whose sole purpose in life was to find out what people were viewing online. Once he saw mail.yahoo.com or aol.com or any other "sneaky" way around it, he blocked those addresses too. But, then he came back to gloat about how smart he was.... jerk.
But, I pitched a fit about not being able to do personal things on break time, and the fact that the company email NEVER worked. Low and behold, they unblocked it!
4They blocked it at my school but I use other sites like browseatschool.com.

7you left out http://www.google.com/mail - if your work doesn't let you use the google.com domain then they can't be the most effective workplace.
another way to access any site thru a firewall if it has a feed (including live journal, blogspot, flickr, cnn, etc...) is to use google reader at http://google.com/reader.
the interface looks the same, but you'll be able to look at all your sites, no glaring site changes. i used it to look at cute overload (a banned site) and no one was the wiser.
8you can also use a proxy to access gmail from work like bookfaceoxy.com
