I found myself watching TiVoed episodes of Miss Guided this weekend and got a kick out of a scene where a student's gossip blog creates drama on campus. Namely, the main character, Becky, learns she's at the bottom of the "do-able" teachers' list and complains about the site to the principal, calling it a "blurgh." The principal, who is played by the dorky SNL alum, Chris Parnell, says "it's a blog, Becky, not a 'blurgh.'" It was a hilarious scene, but I couldn't help but wince. Blog has become such a dirty word and a huge fragment on the population doesn't understand what it means. I love blogs more than anyone, but I can't say I love the word.

I don't think that it's become a "dirty word" more than it's become an umbrella term to describe anything remotely to do with "new media." I'm a web designer and I hear all day every day that people want a blog on our Website. Half of them don't know what that is, but hear that other associations have one so naturally that means we NEED one. I have to explain to them that a blog isn't something you just "do" you have to keep it updated, moderated, financed and staffed.
They think it's something I could just whip up, put out there and then we'd be "in the know"
1"Blog has become such a dirty word and a huge fragment on the population doesn't understand what it means."
I don't know about that. Blog is a pretty wide category and I think people realize there are a lot of different kinds. I rarely hear people use the term blog in a negative way.
2Chris Parnell actually plays the vice-principal but i like the word. Call me silly but just the sound of it is cool.
3I think "blog" is a bit of a word that is harsh-sounding and almost pretentious.
I generally prefer to mine as "my little chunk o' intarwebs"
4When i think of "blog," I think of 13-year-old girls complaining about their days on Xanga.
That's just my first impression, and I know it's the same way for a lot of other people.
But there's plenty of good blogs that totally don't fit that first impression.
5Bob Loblaw's Law Blog...any Arrested Development fans out there?
6I've never liked the word, it sounds weird to me.
Syako, I design websites too and I've had people ask for a blog even though there's no point to them having one. LOL!
7it beats the hell out of calling them "weblogs," as we used to back in my day.
plus, it's certainly far more palatable than it's derivative, "vlog." that one's hard to say!
8The only time I've ever had a problem with the word "blog" is that line from Juno: "Honest to blog?"
Otherwise, I don't think there's anything wrong with the word itself.
9to be honest, i'm neither here nor there on this one. i don't think that the word has ever bothered me, and i don't think that i've ever been too partial to it either.
10whats so dirty about the word blog? i honastly dont get it, i've never been offended.
11The word was indifferent to me until I read this post lol
