I'm forever finding deals online for "refurbished" iPods, laptops and various other electronics, but I haven't yet taken the plunge and purchased one myself. I must admit, when I'm constantly seeing these "as good as new," half-the-price special offers, it gets hard to turn a blind-eye to this world of refurbishments.

If you've ever checked out the refurbished section on the Apple site, you'll notice all your favorite Apple products at a fraction of the price. What's great about Apple's refurbished products is that they come with a one-year warranty, include all the proper documentation, are repackaged, put through an entire testing process and given a new part and serial number. . . Not too shabby, right?! On that note, do you ever buy refurbished electronics?

I have a refurbished macbook and I love it. I will forever only get refurbished for my macs. I mean, why NOT? You can buy the exact same 3 year warranty that you get with a brand new apple laptop, so if anything does go wrong, they'll fix it just like with a new one.
And I never understand why people feel more secure getting a new one....... because refurbished ones were refurbished because they had problems when they were new. People buy them, there is a problem, so they return them to the apple site/store for a new one. Then apple fixes it, and sells it as refurbished. So really there is LESS of a chance of something being wrong with it, if you ask me.
Anyways, I love my macbook. It was good as new and it still works great and my warranty has over 2 years left.
1I bought a refurbished ipod nano. I think I will buy a refurbished Macbook Pro when my current one dies.I agree with animatedpunk. I'm a fan of refurbished.
2My first Mac was refurbished and it's still alive(an iBook G4), which is good and my iPod nano's refurbished. If it's as good as new from Apple and a fraction of brand new stuff, I'd definitely get it.. Although sometimes I like opening a brand-new Mac(and the box!)..
3Buying refurbished is less risky. The hardware has to go through an inspection and pass tests that new models don't.
4I bought a refurbished printer from Tiger Direct. I didn't want to spend the $400 on a 11x17 printer, so they had a refurb for $200.
5My Super Nintendo was refurbished, my old iMac, and I think my printer was, too (although I could be thinking of my parents'). I would never make a huge purchase of something refurbished, though.
6hmmm....I was going to say it's too risky, but from reading the comments I might try and buy a refurbished electronic.
7i never buy refurbished but now from reading the comments, i might try something sometime.
8My iPod was refurbished. I would buy refurbished if it's something small like an iPod. I don't know if I would ever buy a refurb computer or other large item.
9I have had mixed results with refurbished products. I got a refurbished cell phone which turned out to mean someone had it it didn't work and then they turned right around and shipped it to me without fixing anything. That was a nightmare. My mom just bought a refurbished camcorder and it works just fine and you can get the same warranty. So I guess if it works that way with protection in case the problem is still there then yes why not buy refurbished just be careful
10i havent but i would. especially an apple product since they value customer service so much and offer a good warranty.
11I love refurb stuff, especially for pricey electronics.
12Like some above, after reading the comments, I might try refurbished with the laptop I want to buy with my tax refund.
13Yup! I also have a refurbished macbook and it's never given me any problems. I saved about $400 too.
rickimc, you got a refurbished Super Nintendo? awesome!!
14My imac is refurbished and I have had to take it in 2 times to get repaired, but it was still under warranty and now it runs perfect. I also have a refurbished ipod shuffle and I have never had a problem with it. I would most definitely buy refurbished apple products again because they have such a great warranty. As far as other electronics, if they are sold without a warranty I would not purchase them.
15I've never purchased refurbished electronics. I may one day.
16Until recently when I got a Mac Core 8, all I ever did for the last 15 years was buy refurbished.
17I had everything from a Quadra 900 to a G3 Beige, iMac G3, iBook etc.
Never had any problems. In fact I'm still using the G3 Beige on a daily basis.
Yup. I ordered a refurbished ipod from apple.com
18I've had a refurbished CD burner, and a refurbished mp3 player. They both work just fine.
19Never have, but like everyone said above...maybe now I will. Maybe for my next iPod...
20To be honest, I look forward to getting new gadgets too much to get a used one. I think it's brand-new condition is part of the experience! My boyfriend mistakenly bought me a refurbished Logitech DiNovo Edge keyboard on ebay (he didn't notice that it said refurbished) and well, it wasn't pretty. It's no fun to get a USED item when you're expecting a new one. Luckily the seller was awesome and took it back and I got a new one from the store.
Oh, but if it was something for inside my computer or something that wasn't fancy, I'd buy used.
21I've never bought refurbished, but I'm seriously considering it now, with all these good reviews.
22i haven't yet, but i've been looking at refursbished ipods.
23I got a mp3 player as a gift. I couldn't figure out why the songs were getting jacked up on it, I kept having problems. Then my husband finally noticed there was a sticker on the player that said REFURB. Ha, who knew?! And thanks Mom and Dad for the (crap) gift!
24I trust Apple's refurbs enough to warrant purchasing, but for most other things I stick to new. I think it's rare to find a good enough deal compared to new to bother with, esp. since online prices are usually pretty competitive.
I've also bought used on occasion to really save some dough.
25I bought a refurbished Mac and my phone is also refurbished, so far so good. I think the key is to buy from quality companies.
26i haven't before, but i certainly would in the future. i like the idea of reusing at least some of the parts of things that can otherwise get tossed out.
27i have bought a refurbished: printer, imac, and also a "classic" ipod 30gb. i saved probably about $1000 total on those 3 things (and they are things i was going to buy anyway) and never had any problems - i fact, since the printer was a refurbished one i got free paper and 2 ink cartridges (this was before i had my laser printer)!
28I bought a refurb MacBook Pro about a year ago... and I have had very few problems. I had to get a new adapter cord, but that's not even part of the computer! I saved so much money and it had no scratches or any visible sign of being used.
The AppleTV we bought was a refurb too, and no problems either!
One guy at the Mac store in town gave me an earful about buying a refurb laptop, but seriously, why not? Back up your data *in case* something goes wrong... otherwise... no reason not to.
29I haven't personally bought a laptop refurbished because I was afraid to but everyone around me has and had no problems with it...I will to!
30I never have.
31I buy reburbished whenever I can I actually just scored a Reburbed Dyson vacumm cleaner retail $400 I got it (including shipping) $220 and I love it try WOOT.com they feature alot of reburbs
32I bought a referbished digital camera and LOVE it--got a great price and it works great. I also love woot.com and bidz.com
33If it's available I prefer refurbished, you can get great deals on refurbished stuff!!
34on my refurbished imac right now, and lovin' it.
35I've bought a Dell refurb, but would only refurbs from trusted manufacturer sources.
Anyone on ebay claiming it's "refurb"-ed is probably just looking for a quick buck.
36I brought an ipod refurbished. It worked great and I love it. I can say Apple is great for getting thing like that. They do a good job. Apple I trust. Anyone else, I don't know if I would trust them.
37I tend to buy refurbished products because they have to go through all kinds of rigorous testing to be sold again. Most products straight from the assembly line don't. The one time I bought a new Mac, it arrived with a bum hard drive. Just bought a refurb MacBook Pro and it's amazing.
38I sure have! I brought a refurb TiVo, Sansa e250 and a VCR (back in the day). They were great deals and I am very happy with how they work. Oh, and I brought a Compaq too which I have had for over 7 years. ::knock on wood:: You would never know that they were brand new!
39Refurb doesn't necessarily mean there was anything wrong with the product. Once an item leaves the store, the warranty period starts ticking, and even if you turn right around and return whatever it is you bought, the store cannot legally sell it as new.....this will depend on your State, of course, but for the most part, this holds true. Think Christmas gifts that were returned (giftee needed the cash more than the Mac) or the Nano given as a gift and then exchanged for a Classic. Regardless of whether the packaging was opened or not, the store has to send the product in for refurb, which in most cases, like Apple, requires a new serial number for warranty purposes, a check for all accessories, and rigorous testing. Granted, there are some sleazy stores that will put a returned item back on the shelf without checking to see if anything is wrong, but they're far and few between.
That said, most of my PC is refurb, and I've had no problems with any of the components I bought.
40Wow! I had no idea refurbs were so popular and reliable.
41I was recommended a refurbished Macbook by a worker in the Apple store. He said it's all he buys and all he tells his family & friends to buy. I haven't had a single problem with it and I've had it 1 year & 8 months! With the refurbished discount, plus the corporate discount I get through my company, I got it for $899!!!! A steal of a deal!
And recently my bf & I purchased a point & shoot camera refurbished. Everything is working out great there too!
