The last few years in tech have ushered in music revolutions — we've seen physical media overshadowed by music downloads, the tribulations of file sharing, Radiohead's optionally-priced release of In Rainbows (and its implications), and finally, the Internet's distribution of new music. MySpace particularly gave unsigned, unknown acts the means to easily disperse their music into the ears of the young general public, and we've seen some pretty amazing overnight successes like Lily Allen and Panic At the Disco.
Facebook is now getting in on the action and adding Facebook Music for bands to post songs, sell merchandise, and sell their music through iTunes with one click.
It sounds a little more sophisticated than MySpace's current offerings, and I am a little irked at Facebook expanding more and more into the craziness that MySpace has spiraled into, but I have to applaud any Internet-grassroots opportunity for little bands to get heard. I have a few faves I first heard of on MySpace, Internet radio and Pandora — do you?

1this is kind of embarrassing, but..
i found this unknown artist jewel in a columbia house catalog in 1995. they said if i liked tori amos i'd like jewel, so i bought the cd. i loved loved it and was so proud to be ahead of the pack when she became popular over the next year. i never bought another album.

Also, I absolutely recommend CMJ New Music Monthly (magazine, also site) because they review albums and do "Recommended If You Like" which is a great way to find similar artists to your likings.
5That's what I use myspace for...made a profile just to add music I find. Great place for that...made some friends from it, too.
6Not unsigned bands on myspace, but signed, lesser known bands through Internet radio. I was exposed to Ladytron, Clinic, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Black Box Recorder, Sigur Ros... and others. Obviously (for anyone that knows the bands) this was many years ago since they're all a bit more popular now. I think it was when the first CDs for each one came out.

8I've been discovering probably 95%+ of the stuff I listen to online for about ten years now. I grew up listening to mostly oldies radio and without MTV, resenting my parents for it but now thanking them. I whole-heartedly believe most of the best stuff out there isn't on the corporate airwaves, and thus am so grateful for online resources. I LOVE YOU, INTERNET!
9The internet's pretty much the only way for me to find out about new music nowadays. Radio stations barely play new music and TV channels meant to play music have been very disappointing- except Fuse- they're not bad.

11Good progressive Rock is a rare breed these days, and a lot of it comes from Europe. Thank heavens for Yahoo Groups! I found The Flower Kings, The Tangent, and loads more.
12Quietdrive is one of the bands I found online that is starting to get big! I now have a band tee of theirs that is no longer in print. =)

14I found out about some great music online, but usually from music blogs. Also, I wish facebook would give up on trying to do everything in the e-world.
15Yes, I've discovered lots of great signed & unsigned artists through Myspace. One artist, Ced Hughes, even has a link on his page to download his entire album for free. Turns out it's some of the best hip-hop I've heard in ages.
16Pandora has really opened me up to new music. It has been a great resource--and it is FREE!
17back in the days of audiogalaxy, i discovered the white stripes and death cab for cutie years before they broke. more recently, i've discovered a lot of new music though the "listeners also bought" feature on itunes. i found the blow and kid sister this way. i love you, interwebs.
18In the past few years, almost all of the music that I've "discovered" was discovered online.
