I think most of us held off on buying new movies until the format war was over. I was not only avoiding picking Blu-ray or HD DVDs, but I also haven't been buying DVDs at all. I'm afraid to waste my money either way, even if DVDs won't be obsolete right away (I'm still smarting from getting rid of all my VHS tapes, after all). But now that the format war is over and Blu-ray has emerged victorious, I guess it's time to start. Of course, I'm also waiting for the right player and HDTV. So what about you guys?

I'll probably continue to buy DVD's.
1I have 2 blue-rays already! And there are AMAZING!
2I got Planet Earth and wow! On my 46" 1080p Aqueous it looks FANTASTIC!
Physical media is dead, everything is moving to digital and online content. I stream most of my t.v. onto my laptop anyway. Things like Apple TV and Netflix offering streaming downloads are proof of this.
3I'll buy them once its mandatory
4I hardly buy movies as it is, so I'm going to keep renting DVDs. Also, I haven't been compelled to spend money on a HD-TV, so it wouldn't really matter to me at this point.
Plus, I agree that what we're seeing with Apple TV is going to be more of the norm in the future rather than discs. My prediction is that Blue-ray will turn out to be the next Beta...
5I rent through the mail. It's so much cheaper and I notice that most of the DVD's that I just had to have are collecting dust.
6I want more digital content. I'm sick of physical formats. I want all my movies in a 2.5 inch hard drive!!!!
7I've given up on buying movies, as the next best version is always just around the corner. I'm going to stick with renting through Netflix/Blockbuster. Chances are I'll get a Blu-ray player and rent BR instead of DVDs moving forward.
The future is truly headed towards the Apple TV, Netflix STB, and even Cable On-Demand. Once the content is there and it's more affordable, the convenience factor alone will outweigh the quality of physical media just as it has for every media generation in the past: Vinyl -> tape -> cd -> mp3
8I don't really buy dvds now. But I definately wont buy blue rays, so when I do, dvd's it is for me!
9I don't buy movies because I don't like to watch them more than once. I'll be happy when rental establishments start renting blu-ray discs, though. We didn't spend $4000 on a TV for the living room for nothin'!
10I don't see the difference in high-def. I have a LCD TV and I can't tell the difference between that and my analog TV at home. I thought that HD DVD was better, because the price was good, plus it can upconvert regular DVDs. But Blu-ray won out. Whatever. I'm not about to spend around $10 more for a special Blu-ray DVD plus the cost of the DVD player. I like having the physical media available. Having things all virtually really depersonalizes everything for me-- there really isn't much of an opportunity for making great memories by just buying a movie online and watching it.
11I really prefer to physically have the DVD. I just like actually being able to see the collection. It almost looks like art. ;P Having it all digital seems strange to me. I don't think I'd ditch my DVDs just to save space.
I'd like to see/try the Blueray stuff, but I really hope they drop the prices a bit. I can't see myself buying multiple DVDs at those prices.
12If only the producers has seen this thread and known the future was online content...oh wait they did and just lied. >.
13I'm gonna NetFlix until the day when we're all buying theatre quality digital copies of movies and TV shows on Amazon.com and storing them on our palm-sized 4 terabyte external hard drives that sync wirelessly with our TiVos.
I give it 10 years.
14i don't buy dvds very often. i get them from the library or watch movies online.
15I hardly buy movies either.. I usually rent them from iTunes or borrow them from my friends..
16I only buy a film if I REALLY like it (last DVD i bought was in 2006!) I think I'll stick to DVD format; I have a PSP2 so my movies still play on it. I find myself just saving my fave programs on my DVR. Although I do like have the actual dvd of a film rather than a digital one; my worry is that if my cpu or if an apple tv crashed than your films are lost.
17I lovelovelove my DVD collection, and I'll never give it up, but I don't have a Blu-Ray player yet, so there's no point in buying any of the movies right now.
When I can get a dual-format player, then I'll start buying Blu-Ray.
18I don't buy DVD's!!
19I had stopped buying dvd's while we waited for the war to end. With the most recent update to Apple TV I have been renting from iTunes. I love it! I can be impulsive without leaving the house and don't have to worry about late fees. As far as buying goes I will probably start buying digital as we rip our DVD's anyways to store them for watching through the apple tv. Back when the iTunes store first came out I was really against purchasing digital music. I loved the physical cd and the packaging. I love the time and effort of the art and design. 5-6 years later my physical cd's sit in a cabinet and haven't been touched in years. I also haven't purchased a real cd in at least 4 years! If it's not available on iTunes then I just wait until it is. I feel strongly that this is the way I will go with my movies.
20I technically have a Blu-Ray disc that came bundled with a movie I bought (Wings of Honneamise), but I'm not going to start buying them until prices come down and more titles I want are available. (The few hundred standard def DVDs in binders next to the TV have a little something to do with it, too...)
21I rarely buy movies anymore. I rent everything Zip.ca, so I'm pretty happy with the way things are. Not to mention that the price of Blu-Ray discs is too high.
22Nah, blu ray discs and players are too high. Maybe when the prices start to come down!
23I'm sticking with good old-fashioned DVDs
24It's a matter of when the price will be right, I guess. Right now, I've got a TV /12"/ that I bought because it had built in DVD player 4 years ago, and wasn't horribly expensive. (I was basically moving in to an unfurnished dorm room, and had to get furniture as well.)
When I move out of the dorms, I'll get a bigger TV and whatever BluRay/DVD option seems best at the time. Already having a lot of DVDs I don't want to just nix the whole collection and start anew.
25we're now saving up for the ps3
26I would casually buy Blu-Ray if I had a player so if I ever get a PS3 I might buy a movie hear or there. But seriously, who needs to buy movies when you have the internet???
27I will keep using dvds' till I have to use blueray. . .I did the same thing with VHSs'. . . . . .. what do blue rays run on??? ((PS2, 306??))
28I don't think blu-ray is gonna make it in the long run... unless the PS3 really gets people in on it, but it's too expensive for it to get to the majority of people as a DVD replacement, at least for a long time.
29I'll stick with buying DVD's.
30I just bought a DVD yesterday. I love DVD's. I don't think I would spend so much money on Blu-Ray, when my parents spent a lot on DVD's for us.
31*rant ahead*
32I really don't care to spend money on a new $600 blu-ray player, $35 discs, etc, etc, just to have to turn around and buy something else in two years. I'm still hearing those words when CDs came out... Something along the lines of oh, it's so much cheaper to make CDs, so the price will go down eventually. Hmmm. Not. I do believe the price went UP. I think the public took revenge for that little lie by downloading music. I see the same future for movies if studios don't stop nickel and diming the public. Heck, isn't a $20 movie ticket enough to keep them happy?
*end rant*
I wish the internet would have been around back when cassette tapes came out... "why do I need to buy a new cassette player when I have my 8 track tapes? So what if they are smaller, I have all of Led Zeppelin on 8 track and my player works just fine! I'm sticking with 8 track."
Technology can be annoying with all the changes. I will be struggling to get my geek hubby to not buy a player.
33Well.... I don't have a HD player (or TV in the living room) so regular DVDs it will be. Especially with the price the Blu-Rays are right now. I paid $600 for my first DVD player and $25 for my first DVD (Singing in the Rain). I'll be waiting this one out for awhile.
34I am going to keep buying regular DVDs for the time being.
35That totally sucks- considering I just got a HD DVD player as a Christmas gift. I guess the upside is that at least my old normal dvds still look better on this player- but now I feel like it was a wasted gift!
boooo hooo
36I'm in the same boat Jess
37At least we didn't ay for them ourselves...
(pay)
38w00t for Blue-Ray! It's so much better.
