I may be a geek, but I can't stand when I'm chatting with people online, or via text message and they start using shorthands like BRB, TTYL and the always embarrassing TDTM.
I was completely against text abbreviations until a friend admitted she thought "LOL" meant "Lots of Love" not "Laugh Out Loud" and I realized everyone should at least know what the abbreviations mean, even if they don't want to use them.

when i text or type or im, lol is the only abbreviation i use. at all. i hate this "r u l8?" stuff or whatever.

How on earth does 143 mean I love you?!?!?!?! I picked LOL because I have
enough troubles with multiple languages as it is 
2143 One letter in "I" four letters in "love" three letters in "you"
I chose 143, it holds a special place in my heart, since it was the first one I learned.

4I didn't know what "TDTM" was, but now that I do, it's my favorite and I'm going to use it on my husband all the time!!!

7I didn't know TDTM or 143...back in my day of the pager we used "831" for "I Love You" and it meant the oh-so-cheesy, "Eight letters, three words, one meaning." Was that just a Delaware thing???
Also, my bf uses "lol" all the time, which I detest (I much prefer to type out haha, with the right amount of "ha's" to appropriate how funny the previous statement was. If it's really funny I'll even capitalize it), and often when we're in the same room and he uses it I have to point out that he is not, in fact, laughing out loud. He hates that

phasekitty you are so right on that! my husband uses LOL a lot and I find it so .... forced. yeah, first he's not really laughing OUT LOUD, and second, he's just smiling (or not at all!) so why say LOL????
anyways, the abbreviation i use most often is BRB when i'm on YM. that's it. haha. (or should i say, LOL?
