Google recently did a survey to find out email habits regarding love and lust, and well, since Valentine's Day is over, I was more curious about the attitudes toward breaking up over email. A whole third of the men surveyed said they thought it was fine to break up with someone over email, whereas a seventh of women said it was OK.

I'm surprised at how high both of those stats are and am still scandalized by the thought of breaking up with someone over the phone. But a phone dump is still better than an email dump, I'd say — so I want to know, have you ever dumped or been dumped over email?

No.
1That is way tacky to dump someone over email. Ooh, what about a text message? I think if someone dumped me that way I'd feel glad to be rid of their boorish ass.
Oh, remember when Carrie got dumped by Berger on a Post-It? At least she got something hand-written!
2I've been dumped twice via email, both were my two longest and most serious relationships. Haha, thinking about it now, what does that say about me? I must be scary to break up with!
I think that the tackiest way to dump someone would be via text. Ugh, can you imagine @terryt18?
3Nope - but in High School my BF broke-up with me in a note b/w classes!! I think that may have been the old school equivalent - since if were to happen today it probably would have been in an email or text. Wow, I had forgotten all about that!!! And, I have sent the "we need to talk" initial email and then do the actual breaking-up in person.
4Yes, it's happened to me. Tackiest, most cowardly move ever. Men can be total pigs.
5My boyfriend broke up with me in a MYSPACE message! Which to me is even worse than a text or even an email simply because its myspace.
6Oh well lol i've moved on!!!
i was in 8th grade, so i guess it doesn't count.
the last was over a phone.
my best breakup was in a car, it was good because we needed to break up, and he bought me pudding and stuff. he was nice about it. awful, badddd boyfriend, good friend.
7Even better...I've been dumped via an instant message convo. And not only that, but he used the "I'm worried about this ruining our friendship" line. After dumping me. On IM. Sort of like some of you have said above...his method of ending things, in retrospect, pretty much summed up the person he was (is): tacky, boorish, cowardly. Hah.
8i dumped an online boyfriend over msn but never dumped anyone by email.
9I have in fact dumped a boyfriend over email. He became such an ass over the course of our relationship that I just did not want to deal with him face to face period. Tacky? Perhaps. Regret doing it? Absolutely not.
10that is just horrible!!!!!!
11Is it SO bad? Perhaps it's because most of my personal relationships are made over the internet (and our communication happens over the internet as well) that I feel that breaking up with someone via IM is just as good as over the phone. Possibly better?
I understand that it takes a lot of balls to be able to break up with someone gently and in person, but then do you really want to be there when they do it? Does it make someone feel better to have their new ex there, watching them cry or get mad or basically just watching whatever happens?
I think anything that could be said in person (or on the phone) could be said over IM as well. Emails let me think about exactly what I want to say in as much time as it takes. In the end I think it really depends on the relationship, the people in the relationship, why it's ending, and how it's worded but I'm just saying, sometimes email/IM isn't "incredibly tacky" and more preferable.
However, breakup by txt is only "acceptable" if you're 11-14.
12I've dumped a guy over email, and felt this was the best way for me because he was wasting my time. In the course of a week and a half, it jumped from first date to co-habitation, and I needed to halt his rude behavior. He was rummaging through my kitchen cabinets without my permission. My current bf of a year and a half doesn't even go into my kitchen! This guy I dumped was intruding on my life and if I didn't break it off asap, we would have headed to the alter in 6 months.
13Yeah, I've dumped two guys over email. I was just too scared to do it over the phone because they were really nice. I have a phone phobia.
14my lame ass boyfriend of 3 YEARS dumped me over email. and i dumped a boy over email in the 10 grade. ha. so i guess im even.
15I guess mine don't count, because I was dumped over email after a week long "relationship" in grade 8... and then, in grade 9, I dumped a guy (incidentally my current boyfriend) over email. I've grown up since then, though, and would never do that again!
16What's worse is that I didn't even WRITE the breakup email... my best friend did! I was such a wreck I couldn't type straight!
I've dumped someone over email and I'd prefer to be dumped by email rather than in person.
What can I say? I'm a 21st century gal all the way.
I really don't get it when pearl-clutchers lament that the internet is making people "disconnected" just because it makes it possible to have less face-to-face time with people. All the implications that internet communication is somehow less "worthy". I'm sure some nay-sayers said the same thing when the new-fangled technological fad called the "telephone" became widely popular.
It'd be great if other big things that people consider "proper" to do in person can come in email, too. Firings, notifications of death... (I can feel the force of a thousand panties wadding up, haha.) These are just the kinds of things where the pressure to say something back is really the last thing you need.
And for those who thinks it's tacky and terrible that someone broke up with them over email... Isn't it just as well that the method of breakup delivery makes you think less of the dumper? Doesn't that make it less sad that the relationship is over?
17@katiejane24 -
I got dumped via a 5 minute call where he couldn't talk that long and then a 'follow-up' email. It truly hurt, but I agree with you 100% - "in retrospect, pretty much summed up the person he was (is): tacky, boorish, cowardly."
It took me a while to get over it - I think because there was no closure on *my* end. But I think that's the point of doing it that way -- ditch and run.
18I haven't been dumped over email, but I was dumped "out of" a three year relationship over IM!
19I haven't been dumped over email but my best friend was once dumped over a text message that said "I'm sorry and goodbye" !!!! Fortunately it was a guy she had only dated a few times and did not care for that much so it did not hurt her. But that message has become a private joke ever since ...
20I have dumped via text message... and confirmed over email.
What can I say? The guys didn't deserve anything better.
21I did it but I knew it was a cop-out and I was only 15 at the time; what did I know?
22I was dumped out of a two year relationship via text message...and he said I could call him if I needed to...I didn't bother.
23@looseseal...I am with you, i would prefer to be dumped via email rather than, face to face...who cares being dumped is being dumped, and I would rather find out without having to face the person. Especially when it is one of those instances that you know it is coming...my issue above was because the text message was out of the blue saw his name come up and got a smile on my face and then read the message, said "I just can't be involved with you anymore" it was a shock...turns out he was cheating on me anyway...
24yeah..he was my first bf and he broke up with me via IM..
25and it wasnt a long time ago (I'm 17 xD)
but i'm over him..
n i remember i read that soemone wrote that its ok to break up that way coz its 21 century and just that its a new way of communication..i totally disagree..i mean u can discuss many things online but if u really care for the person, and if you are a person of character, u definitely wont break up with them trough IM/E-mail/txt or anything like that...
